Miaoulia Festival on Hydra Island
Every year at the end of June, the car-free island of Hydra in the Saronic Gulf becomes a vibrant stage for Greek history and celebration. The Miaoulia Festival is the biggest annual event on the island, organised by the Municipality of Hydra in honour of Admiral Andreas Miaoulis (1769–1835); the legendary seafarer who commanded the united Greek fleet against the Ottoman naval forces during the Greek War of Independence. For 2027, the festival is expected to take place from 25 to 27 June (exact dates will be confirmed by the Municipality of Hydra in due course). Admission is free.

Program
The three-day programme opens with cultural events on the first day: art exhibitions, historical lectures on the Greek War of Independence, and concerts and theatrical performances in the alleys and squares of the town. On the second day, the Mayor receives representatives of the Greek government and the Hellenic Navy at City Hall, followed by the ceremonial procession of the urn containing the Admiral's heart. The centrepiece of the festival is Saturday evening: an authentic reenactment of the Battle of Gerontas is performed at the harbour entrance, during which a replica of the Ottoman flagship is set alight on the water. The fireworks display that follows draws thousands of spectators to the quayside. On Sunday, a commemorative church service at the Cathedral closes the festival in a solemn atmosphere.
History
Andreas Vokos Miaoulis was born on Hydra on 20 May 1769. A wealthy merchant captain, he placed his fortune and seamanship at the service of the Greek independence movement and commanded the Greek fleet throughout the War of Independence (1821–1829), making the fireship the decisive tactical weapon against the superior Ottoman navy. Miaoulis died on 24 June 1835 in Athens. His death date has been commemorated on Hydra every year since, and over time this tradition has grown into the major festival held today.

Visitor Tips
- Stay one or two nights on Hydra to make the most of the evening events, which are the true highlights.
- Wear comfortable shoes; Hydra's alleys and paths are cobbled and often steep.
- Arrive early to claim a good spot along the harbour for the naval reenactment.
- Late June on Hydra is warm and dry; light summer clothing is all you need.
- ATM coverage on the island is limited; bring enough cash.
