Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026

The heart of the event is the Mercatino di Natale in the centre of Lugano. Stalls are typically open daily, with extended hours at weekends and in the evenings. A highlight is the official lighting of the large Christmas tree on Piazza della Riforma. Gastronomic chalets provide cosy meeting points with music and atmospheric lighting. The entire Old Town and lakeside promenade glow with Christmas lights and invite long walks.

Winterland Locarno

From 19 November 2026 to 6 January 2027, Winterland turns Piazza Grande in Locarno into a large winter village. Highlights include the historic ice rink, 18-hole ice mini-golf, a 250-metre zip line over the square, street-food stands, Fondue Chalet, Chinoise Igloo and the new Winterland Express (1920s railway carriage converted into a bistro). Immersive projections of the fairy-tale show “Nel cuore del tempo” illuminate the square. Children’s carousel, Magic Tree and free shows complete the offer. Admission is free.

Artigiani in Borgo – Christmas Market Ascona

On 5 December 2026 the artisans’ Christmas market takes place in the historic Borgo of Ascona. Local craftspeople present their work along the lakeside and in the narrow streets. The Italian-Swiss atmosphere with lake views makes this one-day market particularly appealing. Opening hours are typically from 10:00 or 11:00 to 20:00.

Mercatini di Natale a Bellinzona

On Sundays 13 and 20 December 2026 (10:00–18:00) the traditional Christmas markets bring life to the historic centre and the lower part of Viale Stazione in Bellinzona. Almost 200 stalls offer handicrafts, specialities and gift ideas against the backdrop of the UNESCO castles Castelgrande, Montebello and Sasso Corbaro. Musical entertainment and food offerings complete the scene. Additional smaller markets take place on Wednesdays in December.

Tickets & Admission for Natale in Piazza Lugano

Admission to the Christmas markets in Lugano, Locarno (Winterland), Ascona and Bellinzona is free of charge. Costs only arise for food, drinks, rides, ice skating or the zip line (in Locarno typically in the low single to double-digit CHF range, converted to euro). Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Lugano

  • Arrival by train to Lugano is convenient; the station is within walking distance of the centre and Piazza della Riforma. By car, nearby multi-storey car parks are available.
  • Ticino is milder than northern Switzerland – still bring warm, weatherproof clothing and comfortable shoes. Evenings by the lake can be cool.
  • Book accommodation in Lugano, Locarno or Ascona early, especially at weekends and around New Year.
  • Combine Lugano with a visit to Locarno (Winterland) or Bellinzona (castles) – the places are well connected by train or bus.
  • Evenings bring out the lights and lake views best; daytime is ideal for a walk along the palm-lined promenade.
