Event Details

Welcome to the Nazaré Big Wave Season

From October 2026 to March 2027, Praia do Norte in Nazaré once again becomes the stage for the biggest waves on the planet. This is caused by the Nazaré Underwater Canyon, which channels and amplifies Atlantic swells, creating walls of water that can exceed 20 meters in height. Nazaré is considered the global epicenter of big wave surfing, drawing spectators, photographers and the world's best surfers every year.

Highlights

  • The largest waves ever surfed, some exceeding 25 meters
  • Current official world record: 26.21 meters (Sebastian Steudtner, 2020)
  • Peak season for the biggest waves usually between November and January
  • TUDOR Nazaré Big Wave Challenge organized by the World Surf League (tow in, jet ski assisted)
  • Free viewing of the action from the lighthouse
  • World renowned athletes such as Justine Dupont, Nic von Rupp and Kai Lenny

Program

The big wave season is not a fixed schedule but a waiting period that depends on Atlantic storm systems; for the 2026/2027 season it is expected to run from 1 November 2026 to 31 March 2027. As soon as swell direction, wind conditions and wave size align, the green light is given on short notice for the TUDOR Nazaré Big Wave Challenge, a World Surf League event in which two person teams tow each other into the waves by jet ski. Even outside the official competition, surfers can be spotted in the water on almost any day with sufficient swell; the exact best days can only be forecast a few days in advance.

Tickets

Visiting Praia do Norte and the lighthouse viewpoint is completely free; no tickets are required. Current wave forecasts and any safety warnings from the local council should be checked before visiting.

Visitor Tips

  • The Nazaré Lighthouse (Farol da Nazaré) offers the best and safest free viewpoint, roughly 110 meters above the sea.
  • The sand at Praia do Norte sits right next to the action; keep a safe distance from the waterline on big wave days.
  • November to January are generally the best months for world class waves.
  • Weather and wind conditions can change quickly; check the latest forecast before traveling.
  • Bring warm, windproof clothing, as it is often very windy along the cliff edge.
