Nestinarstvo – The Fire-Dancing Ritual of Bulgari Village
On 3 and 4 June 2027, the small village of Bulgari in the Strandzha Mountains of southeastern Bulgaria hosts one of the world's most extraordinary rituals: Nestinarstvo, the ancient fire-dancing tradition. Barefoot and in a state of trance, the Nestinari (fire-dancers) walk and dance across a flat circle of glowing embers while carrying sacred icons of Saints Constantine and Helena. The ceremony takes place every year on 3 June, the feast day of Ss Constantine and Helena according to the Julian calendar. Since 2009, Nestinarstvo has been inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
History and Significance
The roots of Nestinarstvo reach far back into ancient Thracian culture, where the ritual was originally a pagan solar ceremony. Dancing across embers was considered a prayer to the Sun God for health, fertility and protection from disease. When Christianity arrived in the region, the icons of Saints Constantine and Helena were incorporated into the rite. Today the Nestinarstvo in Bulgari is not a tourist performance but a living community tradition preserved in its most authentic form. Bulgari is the only village in Bulgaria where the ritual continues as a genuine communal rite rather than a staged show.
Program
The ritual unfolds over two days. On the Sunday before 3 June, the Nestinari icons are carried in a solemn procession to the sacred spring at Vlahou Dol, where they are ritually bathed and blessed with holy water. This procession is repeated on the morning of 3 June, accompanied by drum (Tăpan) and bagpipes (Gaida). Throughout the day a large bonfire burns in the village square. After nightfall, the ceremony reaches its climax:
- Morning: Icon procession to the sacred spring with drum and bagpipe accompaniment
- Daytime: Bonfire burns all day in the village square; folk music and concert program
- Approx. 21:30: The Nestinari fire-dancing games begin on the glowing embers
- The first Nestinar crosses the embers in the shape of a cross; others follow in trance
- Ceremony closes with a traditional Bulgarian Horo circle dance for all attendees
Tickets and Entry
The Nestinarstvo ritual in Bulgari is free and open to the public. No tickets are required. The ceremony belongs to the village community and welcomes all respectful visitors.
Getting There
- Bulgari is located approximately 75 km south of Burgas. The nearest airport is Burgas Airport (BOJ).
- Public transport in the area is unreliable; a rental car or organised tour is strongly recommended.
- On the day of the event, expect police checkpoints on approach roads and cars parked for kilometres along the roadside. Allow extra time for the walk to the village.
- Arrive early to secure a spot near the fire circle. A large screen is set up in the village square for the overflow crowd.
- Book accommodation in Malko Tarnovo or surrounding villages several months in advance; capacity in the area is very limited.
Visitor Tips
- The Nestinarstvo in Bulgari is a serious community ritual, not entertainment. Treat the firewalkers and villagers with respect.
- Commercial shows of fire-dancing are staged at coastal resorts and Sofia restaurants; these bear no resemblance to the authentic ritual in Bulgari.
- The tradition is also observed in the villages of Gramatikovo, Slivarovo, Kondolovo, Kosti and Brodilovo, though Bulgari remains the most well-preserved site.
- Bulgarian national radio and television traditionally broadcast the ritual live.
