Welcome to the New Year's Eve and New Year Celebrations 2026/2027 in Hradec Kralove

Hradec Kralove in the Czech Republic is a calmer New Year destination than Prague: the historic centre, Velke namesti (Great Square) and the White Tower frame celebrations on 31 December 2026 and 1 January 2027. Instead of an official municipal fireworks display, the city has for several years focused on lights, culture and a free New Year programme on the main square. The Royal Christmas Markets on Velke namesti run from 27 November to 23 December 2026; the ice rink and festive lighting are scheduled to continue until 6 January 2027.

Highlights & Attractions at New Year's Eve and New Year Celebrations in Hradec Kralove

  • Free official New Year programme, traditionally held on 1 January on Velke namesti (in recent years branded Prvni den spolu)
  • Ringing of the Augustin bell in the White Tower, often shown live on a large LED screen
  • Christmas lights, carousel and ice rink around the Marian column on the main square
  • No city fireworks: Hradec Kralove prefers quieter multimedia and light shows
  • Private fireworks and restaurant New Year's Eve dinners in the compact historic centre
  • Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, White Tower and baroque square frontage as a winter backdrop
  • Walkable centre: square, tower, cafes and hotels sit close together

Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026/2027

The detailed official timetable for 1 January 2027 is usually published only in December. In recent years the city programme started around 16:00 on Velke namesti and finished around 18:30. Typical elements have included free lentil soup and punch served by city representatives, bell-ringers in historic costume at the Augustin bell, a film or year-in-review on a large screen, and a multimedia show instead of fireworks. For New Year 2026 the Drawman multimedia show was part of the line-up; that exact production has not been confirmed for 2027.

On 31 December 2026 itself there is, based on current announcements, no large municipal stage programme. The ice rink on Velke namesti is listed as open from 10:00 to 20:00 that day. Restaurants, bars and clubs in the centre host paid New Year's Eve evenings. The White Tower is normally closed on Christmas Eve and 1 January; night tours and the viewing gallery should be checked on the tower website before you go.

Tickets & Admission for New Year's Eve and New Year Celebrations Hradec Kralove

The public square, festive lighting and the traditional city programme on New Year's Day are free. Ice-rink entry in the 2026/2027 season has been free; skate rental and sharpening are charged separately (about 50 CZK per hour for rental in the current market season, roughly 2 EUR, plus a deposit). Philharmonic concerts, club nights and restaurant New Year menus are ticketed and vary widely by venue. Official updates and the later New Year programme appear on www.hradeckralove.org; market and ice-rink hours are listed on www.vanocevhradci.cz.

Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Hradec Kralove

  • From Prague the journey takes about 90 minutes by train (services towards Trutnov, station Hradec Kralove hl.n.) or via the D11 motorway; from the main station it is a 20 to 25 minute walk to Velke namesti.
  • Late December temperatures often sit around freezing, with wind on the open square and possible snow: pack warm boots, gloves and a waterproof layer.
  • Book hotels and guesthouses in the centre or along the Elbe early for 31 December; the city is smaller than Prague and Silvester rooms sell out.
  • On 24 and 31 December regular city transport has in recent years ended around 19:00, with only selected and night lines after that; plan a taxi or a hotel within walking distance for after midnight.
  • Do not expect an official city fireworks show. Nearby Nechanice has held a short New Year fireworks display on 1 January in some years; confirm locally closer to the date.
