Karlovy Vary does not stage a single central open-air festival with an official municipal fireworks show. The city has not organised a large public firework display for several years, and pyrotechnics are more tightly regulated. • Getting there: Prague is the nearest major airport; the transfer by train, bus or car takes around two hours. The spa centre is compact and walkable. For Diana, use the funicular from the station next to Grandhotel Pupp on Marianska Street.
• Weather and dress: Late December is cold, often around freezing, with possible snow. Wear warm layers and sturdy shoes for the colonnades; galas usually ask for smart casual or black tie optional.
• Where to stay: Grandhotel Pupp, Hotel Thermal, Hotel Imperial and other historic spa hotels are the natural base for a luxury New Year. Many require a three- or four-night minimum over the turn of the year.
