Welcome to the New Year's Eve 2026/2027 in Angra do Heroísmo
Angra do Heroísmo, a UNESCO World Heritage city on Terceira Island in the Azores, Portugal, marks the turn of the year on Praça Velha. The municipal Passagem de Ano runs through the night of 31 December 2026 into 1 January 2027, with live music, a midnight fireworks display and an open street celebration in the historic centre. The Câmara Municipal de Angra do Heroísmo usually releases the full 2026/2027 stage line-up only in autumn; the setting — a free party on Praça Velha and fireworks from Relvão — has been consistent in recent years.

Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026/2027
In the most recent official edition, the city party on Praça Velha ran from 23:00 to about 05:00. Midnight fireworks from Relvão are visible from the square, the harbour and higher terraces. An evening mass at Igreja da Sé often precedes the concert (18:00 in 2025/2026). After midnight, bands and DJs keep the square going. Artists and exact timings for 2026/2027 have not been published yet; check angradoheroismo.pt and the MyAngra app once the Christmas and New Year calendar is online.
On 1 January, masses at the Sé are customary. Previous seasons also featured a Christmas village (Aldeia de Natal) on Praça Velha, street animation and a later Concerto de Ano Novo by the Sinfonietta de Angra do Heroísmo at the Centro Cultural e de Congressos. Whether those formats return in 2027 will only be clear when the official programme appears. Hotels such as Azoris Angra Garden and local restaurants sell their own ticketed dinners with a view; those are private events, not the municipal square party.
Tickets & Admission for New Year's Eve Angra do Heroísmo
The city's Passagem de Ano on Praça Velha has been free to attend; there is no municipal box office for the square. Food, drinks and possible security checks still apply on site. You pay only for private dinners, hotel packages or seated concerts (for example at the Centro Cultural e de Congressos via Ticketline, once dates are confirmed). Avoid unofficial resellers. Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Angra do Heroísmo
- Fly into Lajes Airport (TER) on Terceira. The drive to the centre takes about 20 minutes (around 20 km) by car or taxi; the Mobi Azores/EVT bus is slower. Night bus service on 31 December is limited, so book a transfer or rental car in advance.
- December and January are mild but wet Atlantic months: daytime highs often around 16–17 °C, nights near 13 °C, with wind and rain common. Pack waterproof layers, sturdy shoes for wet cobbles and a light hat; frost is rare.
- Rooms in the historic centre and near Monte Brasil sell out. Book early for 30 December through 2 January. Overflow stays are available in São Pedro, São Bento or towards Praia da Vitória.
- Strong fireworks views: Praça Velha, Pátio da Alfândega, the Baía de Angra waterfront and selected hotel terraces. Relvão itself may be closed to the public during the launch for safety.
- Terceira has no trains. Centre parking is often restricted on the night; walk or take a taxi to Praça Velha. On New Year's Day many shops are closed; confirm cathedral and museum hours before you go.
