Welcome to New Year's Eve and New Year 2026/2027 in Basel
On 31 December 2026 and 1 January 2027, Basel marks the turn of the year with a mix of a contemplative program at Basel Minster, festive restaurant menus, theatre, concerts and parties in the Old Town. The focus is the area around the Minster, Münsterplatz and the Rhine riverbanks – a winter setting of red sandstone, lit alleys and the city’s position at the border of three countries. Basel has not staged an official New Year’s Eve fireworks display over the Rhine for years; the Canton of Basel-Stadt publishes the current rules for private fireworks shortly before the night.

Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026/2027
The best-known public ritual is the thoughtful New Year’s Eve at Basel Minster. According to Basel Tourism and the Minster program, tower music with the Basel Stadtposaunenchor starts at 11.30 pm; the old year is rung out and people sing together. A short service follows in the Minster at 12.15 am. On 1 January 2027 a New Year service is held at 10.00 am. Münsterplatz is a public square; standard church etiquette applies inside the Minster.
At the same time, the cultural season closes with theatre and concerts. Theater Basel schedules performances on 31 December plus a foyer party; the Sinfonieorchester Basel lists a New Year’s Eve and New Year concert (31 December 2026 at Stadtcasino, 1 January 2027 at the theatre). Many restaurants along the Rhine and in the Old Town serve multi-course menus from about 6.00 or 7.00 pm. Clubs such as Atlantis, Bar Rouge and Nordstern usually announce party line-ups in autumn. Basel Tourism updates the 2026 restaurant and event list on an ongoing basis; book tables and tickets early.

Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Basel
- Arrive via Basel SBB, Basel Badischer Bahnhof or EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg; use trams and buses (BVB) in the city. Night services operate on New Year’s Eve.
- Late December is cold, often around freezing, with wind on the Rhine. Wear layers, sturdy shoes and gloves; Münsterplatz and the riverbanks are paved and can be slippery.
- Book hotels early in the Old Town, along the Rhine (Grossbasel and Kleinbasel) or near Basel SBB – New Year dates fill up quickly.
- Do not plan around an official city fireworks show over the Rhine. Private fireworks in Basel-Stadt are usually limited to a set time window and subject to safety rules; drought can trigger a ban. Check bs.ch before you travel.
- If you toast on Münsterplatz, bring your own glasses. Reserve restaurants and theatre seats in advance; after midnight, bars and the night network make the way back easier.
