Coimbra welcomes 2027 with a large free open-air celebration in the historic downtown and along the Mondego River. The night of 31 December 2026 into 1 January 2027 is one of central Portugal’s liveliest public parties: illuminated streets, several outdoor stages and a midnight fireworks display over the water. The official artist lineup for 2026/2027 had not been released as of August 2026; Coimbra City Council usually announces the bill in late autumn.

Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026/2027

In recent editions the public program has run from about 21:30 on 31 December until the early hours of 1 January, often until 06:00. The fixed highlight is the roughly ten-minute fireworks show at midnight, fired from the river between the Pedro e Inês footbridge and the Santa Clara bridge. Strong viewing spots include the terrace of Mosteiro de Santa Clara-a-Velha, the riverbanks, Santa Clara Bridge and higher ground on the opposite bank.

Headliners change every year. For 2025/2026 the main stage at Santa Clara-a-Velha featured Branko and Dino D’Santiago, Praça do Comércio hosted electronic and hybrid sets, Praça 8 de Maio ran World Dance Music on a 360-degree stage, and Quebra-Costas focused on Coimbra jazz and rock. Hotels and restaurants also offer private New Year’s Eve menus; those events are ticketed and book separately from the free street celebration.

Tickets & Admission for New Year's Eve Coimbra

The city stages and fireworks are traditionally free. There is no public ticket for the open-air party. You only pay for optional extras: restaurant menus, hotel Réveillon packages or private club nights. As a reference from the previous season, five-star Quinta das Lágrimas sold two-night packages with a tasting dinner and New Year’s brunch from about EUR 399.50 per person in a double room for 2025/2026; 2026/2027 hotel rates were not widely published by August 2026. Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Coimbra

• Getting there: Coimbra sits on the A1 between Lisbon and Porto. Trains stop at Coimbra-A (closer to the center) and Coimbra-B (long-distance). SMTUC often runs extra night circuits on New Year’s Eve; in some years those buses have been free. Downtown parking is limited; the city usually lists free or extended-hour parks such as Parque Verde and Convento São Francisco.
• Weather and clothing: Late December nights are often around 6–12 °C, with a real chance of rain. Wear layers, sturdy shoes and a waterproof jacket. Umbrellas are awkward in the fireworks crowd.
• Where to stay: Rooms in the Baixa, around Largo da Portagem and on the left bank of the Mondego sell out early. Book well ahead. Quinta das Lágrimas, university-area guesthouses and apartments near Parque Verde are popular bases.
• Midnight custom: Many people in Portugal eat twelve grapes with the twelve chimes and toast with sparkling wine. Street stalls and Baixa cafés stay open for snacks and drinks.
• Planning: Arrive early for a river view. The city council posts road closures, stage maps and transport updates shortly before 31 December. After midnight the historic streets remain lit; festive lighting normally continues through Epiphany on 6 January.
