• Take the train to Füssen station and walk into the old town; by car use the A7 and park outside the narrow historic centre, which fills up over New Year.
• At about 800 metres above sea level it is cold, windy and often snowy. Pack layers, sturdy winter shoes and gloves, especially if you stand by the river.
• Rooms sell out early. Book the old town, Lake Forggensee or Hopfen am See well in advance; many hotels sell package stays only.
• Better firework and skyline views: Galgenbichel, the King Ludwig Promenade and the Festspielhaus lakeside – not the protected old-town lanes.
• Most shops stay closed on 1 January. Plan food and transport ahead and arrive early at the riverbank or Theresien Bridge for the torch swim.
