Welcome to the New Year's Eve and New Year 2026/2027 in Groningen
Groningen rings in 2026/2027 as a compact university city with a lit historic centre, a winter market on the Grote Markt and a busy club scene. New Year’s Eve falls on Thursday 31 December 2026; New Year’s Day is Friday 1 January 2027. Full club line-ups for this edition are usually published only in November and December. What is already confirmed is Winterstad Groningen on the Grote Markt, listed in the municipal major-events calendar from late November 2026 through 3 January 2027.

Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026/2027
Daytime energy sits with Winterstad Groningen: stalls, skating, the Ferris wheel and winter cafes on the Grote Markt through the first days of January 2027. Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve usually have shorter opening hours; 2026/2027 hours will be posted closer to the date. On 31 December the focus shifts to bars, hotel parties and clubs. In previous years that list included EM2, Grand Theatre, Stadslab, Forum Groningen and Palace, plus a free, low-fireworks countdown on the Vismarkt billed as 3,2,1 Goud & Nieuw (last edition roughly 22:00–01:00). Whether a central public countdown returns for 31 December 2026 had not been formally announced as of September 2026. The city has already dropped plans for a large official countdown with a light and fireworks show on the Grote Markt or Vismarkt, citing cost and policing.
Plan around the new national fireworks law. From the 2026/2027 turn of the year, consumer fireworks are widely banned. In August 2026 Mayor Roelien Kamminga confirmed Groningen will not issue exemptions for associations. Professional displays, such as those previously staged in Ten Boer, sit outside the consumer ban but are not a city-centre replacement show. Some clubs may still plan limited effects on private grounds; that will only be clear once tickets go on sale. For a classical start to the year, the Noord Nederlands Orkest plays its Hanzevast New Year concert at De Oosterpoort on 7 January 2027.
Tickets & Admission for New Year's Eve Groningen
Squares and streets are free. Winterstad itself has no entry fee; skating, the Ferris wheel and some rides may cost extra. Club tickets in 2025/2026 typically landed between about EUR 22 and EUR 30 (EM2 at EUR 24.50, Flonk at Stadslab at EUR 30, Palace around EUR 22.50), plus booking fees. 2026/2027 prices are not yet published across the board. Expect a practical range of EUR 0 to EUR 50 for most parties. Popular rooms sell out and often move to online-only sales. Check visitgroningen.nl from late autumn for listings; New Year concert tickets go through SPOT Groningen and the orchestra shop. Always confirm door times, dress codes and whether re-entry or late arrival after midnight is allowed.
Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Groningen
- Arrive at Groningen Centraal; Grote Markt and Vismarkt are a 10–15 minute walk. Buses and trains on 1 January usually run a reduced holiday timetable.
- Late December is cold and often wet. Wear waterproof shoes, layers and a windproof coat if you plan to stand outside for the countdown.
- Book rooms near the Grote Markt, Folkingestraat or the station early. The city is small and fills quickly on New Year’s Eve.
- Consumer fireworks are banned across the municipality. Keep streets clear for emergency services and expect extra enforcement.
- Do not rely on last year’s line-ups. Confirm 2026/2027 parties on Visit Groningen and venue sites from November onwards.
