Welcome to the New Year's Eve 2026/2027 in Matera
New Year's Eve and New Year 2026/2027 in Matera centre on Piazza Vittorio Veneto, the main square at the gateway to the Sassi. The UNESCO-listed cave city in Basilicata combines a public concert, a midnight countdown and views of the illuminated rock-cut districts. The official stage line-up for the night of 31 December 2026 into 1 January 2027 had not been released at the time of research; in recent years the square party usually started around 21:00 and ran into the early hours.

Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026/2027
Matera's public New Year's Eve has followed a similar pattern for several years: the stage goes up on Piazza Vittorio Veneto after the Christmas market period, doors open in the evening, local acts play first, a DJ set leads into the countdown around 23:45, and a headliner often follows after midnight. For 2025/2026 the running order was roughly 21:00 to 02:00, with a reported capacity of about 5,000 people and controlled entry points. Artists, exact times and security rules for 2026/2027 are still to be announced. Check Comune di Matera and Matera Welcome shortly before the holiday.
December and early January also bring Christmas lights, markets and, in some years, a living nativity route through the Sassi. A large fireworks show over the Gravina is not guaranteed every New Year's Eve; major pyrotechnics are more typical of the Festa della Bruna in July. Music, lighting and the Sassi skyline define the night. Private hotel and restaurant dinners often start around 20:00–20:30 with a multi-course menu.
Tickets & Admission for New Year's Eve Matera
The public celebration on Piazza Vittorio Veneto has been free in documented municipal editions; there were no tickets, but capacity limits and access checks applied. The same model is likely for 2026/2027, though it is not yet officially confirmed. When the city publishes the program, details appear on comune.matera.it and materawelcome.it. Expect costs mainly for lodging (often sold out early) and for restaurant New Year's Eve menus, which are independent of the square concert. Museums may run special hours and ticket prices on 1 January.
Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Matera
- Getting there: The nearest major airport is Bari Karol Wojtyla (BRI), then bus or train to Matera Centrale; the square is walkable from the station and the Piano district. Traffic in the historic core and the Sassi is often restricted — use outer car parks and walk.
- Weather and clothing: Late December in Matera is often cold, with single-digit to low double-digit temperatures, wind and possible rain. Wear layers, a windproof jacket and sturdy, non-slip shoes for cobbles and Sassi steps.
- Stay: Rooms in the Sassi and the centre book out well ahead of New Year's Eve. Reserve early and check walking distance to Piazza Vittorio Veneto if you want to reach the concert without a long transfer.
- Square safety: In previous years entry closed once capacity was reached. Arrive early, follow police and steward instructions, and set a meeting point away from pinch points.
- Night in the Sassi: Alleys are steep and some stretches are dimly lit. A phone torch, some cash for smaller venues and consideration for residents in the cave neighbourhoods make the evening easier.
