Welcome to the New Year's Eve 2026/2027 in Trier
On Thursday, 31 December 2026, and Friday, 1 January 2027, Trier welcomes the new year in Germany's oldest city. Celebrations concentrate around Porta Nigra, the Main Market (Hauptmarkt), Kornmarkt and the Roman-medieval old town. Open squares, clubs, churches, the theatre and the traditional New Year's Eve run shape the night; there is no single official municipal midnight fireworks show.

Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026/2027
The afternoon of 31 December belongs to the Silvesterlauf, with elite and public 5 km races plus shorter kids' distances. In the evening Porta Nigra, Simeonstrasse and Kornmarkt fill up; clubs typically open parties from about 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Theater Trier plans a major music-theatre night with Carmina Burana on 31 December 2026 in the Grosses Haus before renovation work begins. A New Year concert is scheduled for 1 January 2027, expected at Europahalle. The Christmas market on Hauptmarkt and Domfreihof ends on 22 December 2026; the Ice Arena on Kornmarkt usually stays open into January or February.
No official city high-altitude fireworks display at midnight has been announced. Rockets and batteries come mainly from private visitors and venues. Public squares are free to enter. Club nights in recent years often cost about 0 to 25 euros. Tourist New Year packages from Trier Tourismus und Marketing GmbH last sold for around 289 to 369 euros per person in a double room, including hotel, programme and a city tour; 2026/2027 offers appear on trier-info.de. Theatre and concert tickets are sold by Theater Trier; race numbers for the Silvesterlauf are available at silvesterlauf.de. Family New Year programmes at the Trier youth hostel tend to sell out early.
Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Trier
- Arrive by train at Trier Hauptbahnhof, then walk or take a city bus to Porta Nigra; New Year's Eve often uses a Saturday timetable with later last buses, New Year's Day a holiday timetable.
- Late December in Trier is cold and often wet or windy: pack warm waterproof layers, sturdy shoes and hearing protection if you stay near fireworks.
- Book hotels near Porta Nigra, Hauptmarkt or the Moselle early; ask the Tourist Information next to Porta Nigra (Simeonstrasse 60) about packages.
- Set off fireworks only where allowed; Hauptmarkt is regularly a ban zone. Keep distance from crowds and use only approved fireworks.
- Reach Petrisberg or Markusberg before midnight for views; taxis are scarce after 12 a.m., so plan a walkable hotel or a clear way home.
