Welcome to the New Year's Eve 2026/2027 in Würzburg
New Year's Eve in Würzburg 2026/2027 takes place on 31 December 2026 and continues into New Year's Day on 1 January 2027. The focus is the historic old town between Marktplatz, Domstrasse and the Alte Mainbruecke (Old Main Bridge), with views of the River Main, Fortress Marienberg and the UNESCO-listed Residence. There is no single ticketed city festival. Instead, free street celebrations mix with club nights, gala dinners and a traditional New Year's Eve river cruise.

Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026/2027
31 December 2026 in Würzburg usually starts with an early dinner or a glass of Franconian wine before the old town fills after 22:00. In the municipal safety zone – Old Main Bridge, Vierröhrenbrunnen square, Domstrasse to Sternplatz and adjoining lanes – fireworks and glass containers are banned from 22:00 until 02:00. Alcohol is allowed; drinks can be poured into cups at the checkpoints. At midnight the crowd watches fireworks over the Main valley. Club and dinner line-ups for 2026/2027 are typically published in autumn 2026. In previous years parties often started around 22:00; Posthalle opened “Tanz der Moleküle” after midnight so guests could still see the fireworks first.
Closures that have applied in recent years and usually return: Kaeppele and its forecourt from 16:00, Fortress Marienberg grounds from 21:00, and Residenzplatz from 22:00. Fireworks remain forbidden around the Residence, the fortress and other historic buildings. On New Year's Day the 1. Wuerzburger Boellerschuetzen Julius Echter von 1985 e. V. greet the new year after the cathedral noon bells with a short salute from the fortress bastion. The Würzburg Christmas Market 2026 is listed in the city calendar from 27 November to 23 December and will already be over by New Year's Eve. Check wuerzburg.de and individual venues shortly before the date for the final WVV night timetable, closures and party programmes.
Tickets & Admission for New Year's Eve Würzburg
The street celebration in the old town is free; public outdoor festivities cost 0 euros. Paid options sit on top of that. Club tickets in 2025/2026 typically ranged from about 12 to 35 euros. The New Year's Eve cruise from Alter Kranen was 149 euros including buffet and drinks (listed as sold out for 2026). Gala dinners ran from around 125 euros at Buergerspital wine taverns to 198 euros for the Maritim New Year's ball and 309 euros for the all-inclusive Schloss Steinburg package. Prices for 2026/2027 were not fully published as of August 2026 and may rise. Tickets are sold by clubs, hotels, the river cruise operator and the Tourist Information at Falkenhaus, Marktplatz 9. Visitors who only want the bridge atmosphere and fireworks do not need a ticket.
Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Würzburg
- Arrive by train at Würzburg Hauptbahnhof. WVV runs a special New Year's Eve timetable with shuttle buses; trams through Domstrasse are interrupted for part of the night. Driving into the old town is impractical.
- Late December in Lower Franconia is usually cold, often around freezing, with wind on the bridge. Wear layers, sturdy shoes and a hat.
- Hotels near the Residence, the river and Steinburg sell out quickly. Book early and consider Heidingsfeld, Sanderau or Gromnuehl as backups.
- Expect bag checks at the safety zone. Do not bring glass or fireworks. Families with children, dogs or large groups should allow extra time at the gates.
- For a quieter view of the fireworks, head early to Weinberg am Stein or Schloss Steinburg. Kaeppele and the fortress are generally closed overnight.
