Leuven marks the turn of the year with a compact winter season in the historic centre. The free countdown on Oude Markt on 31 December is the main public moment, joined by the New Year's Eve Corrida, lights, markets and bar afterparties. The city's official Wintertijd programme for 2026/2027 is usually published in November; core dates follow the established pattern of previous years.

Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026/2027
The sporting opener is the Eindejaarscorrida on Sunday 27 December 2026. Kids' 1 km at 09:45, 4 km at 10:00, 8 km at 10:30 and 12 km at 11:15. Registration is required except for the kids' run; fields are capped and have sold out quickly in recent years.
The public countdown traditionally runs on 31 December from about 22:00 to 00:30 on Oude Markt. DJs play from a stage in the square; capacity is around 12,000–15,000 and the square may close when full. There is no official city fireworks display; private fireworks, firecrackers and helium balloons are banned. After midnight the party moves into surrounding cafés. Club events and the New Year concert at 30CC/Schouwburg need separate tickets. The full Wintertijd 2026/2027 calendar had not been released in early September 2026.
Tickets & Admission for New Year's Eve Leuven
The Oude Markt countdown is free and does not require registration; arrive before 22:00 because the square can be closed at capacity. The Corrida costs 15 euros and includes chip timing and changing rooms at Sporthal Rijschool. Club nights and concerts typically range from about 10 to 40 euros depending on the venue. Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Leuven
- Travel by train to Leuven station; Oude Markt and Ladeuzeplein are a short walk. De Lijn runs extra festive buses on New Year's Eve in the Leuven region
- Late December and early January are cold and often wet; wear warm waterproof layers and sturdy shoes. Fireworks are banned across the city
- Book hotels and B&Bs in the centre early; KU Leuven, winter events and New Year's Eve push demand up
- Do not carry glass bottles of spirits inside the ring from 20:00; expect security checks and a possible closure of Oude Markt
- After midnight continue in Oude Markt cafés or use night buses; crowd density and alcohol on the square should be taken seriously
