Welcome to Oeteldonk: Carnival in Den Bosch 2027
From 7 to 9 February 2027, the Dutch city of 's-Hertogenbosch transforms into the legendary village of Oeteldonk. Around 100,000 visitors celebrate four days of the Netherlands' most colourful folk festival: the traditional arrival of Prins Amadeiro at the central station, the spectacular Grote Optocht (Grand Parade) on Monday, and countless parties across the historic Old Town. The official motto for 2027 is Kielekielekiele, and anyone joining the celebrations needs the blue farmer's smock (boerenkiel) and the red-white-yellow Oeteldonk scarf.
What Is Oeteldonk?
Oeteldonk is the Carnival name of 's-Hertogenbosch in the province of Noord-Brabant. During the Carnival days, the city officially becomes a separate village with its own prince, its own flag and its own rules. The mayor symbolically hands the city keys to Prins Amadeiro, and anyone entering the city centre enters Oeteldonk. What makes it unique: unlike many other Carnival celebrations, virtually everyone wears the same traditional dress, namely the blue boerenkiel with the red-white-yellow scarf. Social status, job titles and rank disappear entirely, because everyone is equal.
2027 Highlights
- Intocht (Sunday 7 February, 11:11 AM): Prins Amadeiro arrives by train at Centraal Station and processes through the city centre. The official opening of Oeteldonk.
- Grote Optocht (Monday 8 February, from 12:33 PM): The Grand Parade has wound through the city streets since 1882, featuring spectacular floats, brass bands and walking groups. Around 100,000 spectators line the route.
- Keinderoptocht (Tuesday 9 February, from 1:11 PM): The children's parade through the Karrenstraat: perfect for families with young children.
- Begrafenis van Boer Knillis (Tuesday 9 February, 11:33 PM): The emotional finale on the Markt square: the symbolic burial of village founder Knillis and the announcement of the 2028 motto.
- Kindercarnaval on Sunday: Youth Prince arrival at 9:44 AM, Keinderkupkesfeest from 1:11 PM at the Hoftheater der Amadeiro's.
- Hundreds of Carnival parties in pubs and cafés across the Old Town throughout all four days.
Program Overview
Saturday 6 February is the unofficial warm-up: the Oeteldonkse Traaijout begins at 8:33 PM in De Knillispoort, and bars across the city start filling with costumed revellers. On Sunday 7 February, the official Carnival opens with the arrival of Prins Amadeiro at 11:11 AM at Centraal Station, followed by the first parade through the city centre from 12:55 PM. Monday 8 February brings the flagship Grote Optocht, starting at 12:33 PM and finishing around 4:11 PM at the Markt. Tuesday 9 February belongs to the children and the closing ceremonies: Keinderoptocht from 1:11 PM, Konzèrt op de Mèrt from 1:33 PM, and the Begrafenis van Boer Knillis at 11:33 PM on the Markt.
Dress Code and Tradition
Anyone celebrating in Oeteldonk wears the boerenkiel: a blue farmer's smock decorated with emblems and year badges from previous Carnival seasons. The mandatory accessory is the red-white-yellow Oeteldonk scarf. Unlike other Carnival festivals, colourful fancy dress costumes are actively discouraged in Oeteldonk; the traditional dress is a mark of respect and community equality. Women wear the kiel or the black boerenjas, also decorated with emblems. New emblems for the 2027 season under the motto Kielekielekiele will be available from authorised retailers from autumn 2026.
Family-Friendly Carnival
Oeteldonk is considered one of the most family-friendly Carnivals in the Netherlands. The Tuesday Keinderoptocht (from 1:11 PM) and Kindercarnaval at Muziekcentrum de Toonzaal (1:00 PM to 7:00 PM) are ideal for families with young children. Sunday also offers the Keinderkupkesfeest at the Hoftheater with a dedicated children's programme. Street events and parades are free to attend.
