Chamber Music in a Hidden Rhodope Mountain Village

The Off the Beaten Path Chamber Music Festival returns in 2026 with its eighth edition to the picturesque mountain village of Kovachevitsa in the Rhodope Mountains of Bulgaria. From July 31 to August 2, 2026, the Svetlina Community Center becomes an intimate concert venue surrounded by centuries-old stone architecture and pristine nature. Founded in 2017 by pianist Lora Tchekoratova and violinist Georgy Valtchev, the festival has grown into one of Europe's most distinctive classical music experiences.

The heart of the festival beats for three days at the Svetlina Community Center in Kovachevitsa:

  • Friday, July 31, 2026, 11:30 PM – Midnight Concert: world premiere by Peter Kerkelov
  • Saturday, August 1, 2026, 7:00 PM – World premiere of a new work by David Ludwig; also Bach, Saint-Saëns, De Falla, Bloch and Korngold
  • Sunday, August 2, 2026, 3:00 PM – Afternoon concert "Afternoon of a Faun": Bach, Mozart, Gershwin, Debussy, Milhaud and Respighi

Visitor Tips

  • Kovachevitsa is located in the Rhodope Mountains, approximately 200 km south of Sofia; the best way to arrive is by rental car via Gotse Delchev.
  • The village is a national architectural reserve featuring traditional stone buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries; a walk through the village before or after the concert is highly recommended.
  • Accommodation in the village and surroundings is limited: book well in advance.
  • The concert venue has limited capacity; secure tickets early to avoid missing out.
  • Daytime temperatures in summer are pleasant; bring a light jacket for evening concerts and especially the Midnight Concert.
