Welcome to Ohi Day 2026 in Thessaloniki

On Wednesday, 28 October 2026, Greece marks Ohi Day ("No Day"), a national public holiday commemorating 28 October 1940, when Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas rejected an ultimatum from fascist Italy, leading Greece into the Second World War. The country's largest and most impressive parade is held not in Athens but in Thessaloniki, linking the day to the city's own liberation.

Highlights

  • Greece's largest military parade, held along the waterfront
  • Participation of army, navy and air force units as well as security corps
  • Student parades on the eve of the holiday and on the day itself
  • Attendance of senior state officials (President, Prime Minister)
  • Showcase of modern Greek defense technology
  • Blue and white flags decorating public buildings across the city

Program

The military parade moves along Megalou Alexandrou Avenue on the city's new waterfront in the morning. Civilian groups, cultural associations and schoolchildren in traditional costumes march first, followed by motorized and marching units from all three branches of the armed forces and the security corps. In recent years, modern weapons systems such as drones and AI powered equipment have also been presented to the public. A separate student parade takes place the day before. Central streets are closed to traffic for the celebrations, and many archaeological sites and museums remain closed on the day.

Tickets

Ohi Day is a public, free event and no ticket is required. Arrive early to secure a good spot along the parade route, as large crowds gather quickly along the waterfront.

Visitor Tips

  • Arrive early, ideally before 9:00 AM, to get a good view of the parade route.
