The Storica Parata dei Turchi in Potenza 2027
On 29 May 2027, the southern Italian city of Potenza stages one of Italy's most extraordinary historical pageants. The Storica Parata dei Turchi has taken place annually since 1578, always on the eve of the feast day of the city's patron saint, San Gerardo. More than 1,100 costumed participants wind through the old town in three historical tableaux spanning nearly a thousand years of local history. Entry is completely free of charge.

Program
The wider Maggio Potentino festival begins on 26 May with the Potenza Folk Festival, one of the most important popular music events in Italy. For three days, national and international artists perform on Piazza Mario Pagano alongside food stands serving local produce from the Basilicata region and cultural activities organised by dozens of local associations throughout the historic centre.
The climax of the week is the evening of 29 May. At 7:00 PM the historical procession departs from Stadio Alfredo Viviani and follows a fixed route through Viale Marconi, Via Verdi, Viale Dante, Via Vaccaro, Corso Umberto I, Via Portasalza, Via Pretoria and Piazza Matteotti before arriving at Largo Duomo. At approximately 10:30 PM the Iàccara, a twelve-metre reed-and-timber torch weighing one tonne, is set alight in Piazza Matteotti. Before the burning a jester climbs to the top of the torch to entertain the crowd. At around 11:00 PM the procession receives the Archbishop's blessing in front of San Gerardo Cathedral, followed by celebrations in music and food throughout the night.
The Three Historical Eras
- Era 1100: Medieval Potenza at the time of San Gerardo; religious dignitaries, clergy and townspeople in 12th-century costume.
- Era 1500: The Ottoman threat and the legend of the Gran Turco; warriors, knights and conquest figures in vivid armour.
- Era 1800: Modern-era Potenza with nobles, merchants and everyday figures of the 19th century.
The Legend of the Iaccara
The Iàccara is the defining symbol of the Parata: a twelve-metre bundle of reeds and timber weighing a full tonne, carried on the shoulders of 20 men. A jester perches at the top, mocking and entertaining the crowd throughout the march. At the end of the procession the Iaccara is set on fire in Piazza Matteotti as a gesture of renewal and gratitude to the patron saint.
Visitor Tips
- Arrive early and find a position along Viale Marconi or Corso Umberto I; elevated spots in the old town offer the best views of the procession.
- Travel by bus or train is strongly recommended; on the evening of 29 May a free shuttle bus runs between the Unibas car park and the city centre.
- Glass containers and bottles are prohibited throughout the event area.
