Welcome to the Living Nativity 2026 in Greccio
In December 2026, the small mountain village of Greccio in the province of Rieti once again brings to life the very first nativity scene in history. In 1223, Saint Francis of Assisi, together with the local lord Giovanni Velita, staged the birth of Christ here for the first time with real people and animals, and since 1972 this event has been reenacted in Greccio every year.

The performance traditionally takes place on several dates between Christmas and early January, usually in the late afternoon or early evening. In recent years the dates fell between December 24 and January 6. The exact days for the 2026 edition have not yet been confirmed and will be published by the local Pro Loco in autumn.
