The Commemoration of the Psara Holocaust
Every last Sunday of June, the small Aegean island of Psara gathers to honour the memory of one of the most profound events of the Greek War of Independence: the Holocaust of Psara on 22 June 1824. The commemorative festivities typically span two to three days, combining religious ceremonies, cultural performances and collective mourning for the heroes who sacrificed their lives for Greek freedom. The events are organised by the Municipal Council of the Heroic Island of Psara.
Historical Background
In June 1824, Ottoman and Egyptian forces descended on Psara, one of the most important naval strongholds of the Greek Revolution. As resistance became impossible, the last defenders detonated their own powder magazine at the Black Ridge (Mavri Rachi) rather than surrender themselves or their arms to the enemy. This act of self-sacrifice has become one of the defining symbols of Greek heroism in the struggle for independence. The national poet Dionysios Solomos immortalised the tragedy in a famous epigram that is part of every Greek schoolchild's education to this day.

- Sunday: Morning liturgy and Archiepiscopal Mass at the Church of Saint Nicholas from 07:00; Doxology for the Holocaust at 10:30; commemorative address by the President of the Psarian Brotherhood; memorial prayer at the former home of Konstantinos Kanaris; wreath-laying ceremony at the Heroes Monument on the Square of the Holocaust Heroes; evening concert by the Military Orchestra of the 96th ADTE
Mavri Rachi – The Black Ridge
The site of the final stand, Mavri Rachi (the Black Ridge), is the historic heart of the commemoration. At its summit stands a monument inscribed with Solomos's famous epigram. The ascent from the village takes approximately 40 minutes and offers sweeping views across the Aegean. During the Saturday evening ceremony, hundreds of visitors gather here for a deeply moving open-air memorial service.
