Koprivnica Renaissance Festival 2026

From 20 to 23 August 2026, the northern Croatian city of Koprivnica transforms into a vivid Renaissance stage. Set on the historic fortress walls of the so-called Festung Koprivnica, the remains of a magnificent 16th-century anti-Ottoman Renaissance fortification, more than 1,300 costumed performers from Croatia and 13 other European countries bring the late Middle Ages back to life.

The Renaissance Festival is not a spectacle to be merely watched. It is a full sensory experience: the clatter of hooves on cobblestones, the aroma of dishes cooked over open fire according to original 15th and 16th-century recipes, the clash of swords during knightly duels and the sound of medieval musicians filling the evening air.

Highlights

  • Knight tournaments and battles on the main stage and fortress walls
  • Alchemists and craftspeople in authentic period workshops
  • Torch-lit night assault on the fortress, illuminated by hundreds of torches and fire-breathers
  • Leper village as a historical medieval scene
  • Large artisan market showcasing nearly forgotten historical trades
  • Medieval music, dance and jesters from across Europe
  • Authentic medieval cuisine: wild boar, venison, rooster and nettle dishes
  • Mead, nettle beer and regional wines from the Podravina region
  • Plastic-free event: all food and drinks are served in wooden and ceramic vessels only

History & Program

The festival reconstructs the history of Koprivnica starting from the city's first documented mention in the 13th century. The opening ceremony features the ceremonial arrival of King Ludovic I of Anjou from 1356, during which the city received its Charter as a Free Royal Town. The 15th century is represented through Herman of Celje, the then-owner of Koprivnica.

The main focus, however, is the 16th century, when the Renaissance fortifications were built on which the festival takes place today. For four full days and nights, many participants stay in their medieval tent camps within the city walls. The undisputed highlight is the night assault on the fortress, when the grounds are lit by hundreds of torches and fire displays.

In 2026, the festival coincides for the first time with the closing weekend of Ljeto na Zrinskom, offering visitors two completely different experiences in one trip: an authentic journey into the past within the Renaissance walls and a modern music and wine program in the city park.

Tickets & Admission

Entry on the first festival day (Thursday, 20 August) is free of charge. On the remaining three days (Friday, Saturday, Sunday), the entrance fee is €5 per person. Children enter free on all four days. Parking costs €2 on Friday and €3 on Saturday and Sunday.
