The Robola Wine Festival in the Omala Valley
Since 1978, the cultural association "O Mermigkas" from the village of Fragata has organised one of the most authentic and beloved wine festivals in the Greek islands: the Robola Wine Festival. Held traditionally on the first weekend after 15 August, the 2026 edition takes place on 22 and 23 August, starting at 20:30, in the scenic village of Fragata in the Omala Valley, close to the Monastery of Saint Gerasimos.
The star of the evening is the Robola grape, a white wine variety native exclusively to Kefalonia. Robola holds an Appellation of Superior Quality (OPAP) status, the highest Greek wine designation, and is widely regarded as one of the finest indigenous varieties in the Mediterranean. The vines grow on the limestone-rich Omalos plateau at elevations of up to 800 metres above sea level.

Program
The festival opens on the evening of 22 August at 20:30 and continues until the early hours of 23 August, with celebrations resuming the following evening. The programme features live orchestras, traditional dance groups and an unlimited flow of complimentary Robola wine provided by the organisers and the Robola Wine Cooperative of Kefalonia. Traditional dishes such as goat stew and Kreatopita are served alongside the wine. For those arriving earlier in August: a second two-day Robola festival takes place in Valsamata on 8 and 9 August.
The Robola Grape
Robola is a crisp, aromatic white wine with citrus and floral notes and a distinctive mineral finish derived from the limestone terraces of Mount Ainos. The vines are cultivated by the Robola Wine Cooperative of Kefalonia, located in the Omala Valley at around 800 metres altitude. The festival celebrates the harvest of the new vintage and stands as the highlight of the Kefalonian wine calendar.
Visitor Tips
- Free entry; wine is served at no charge.
- The village of Fragata lies approximately 12 km south-east of Argostoli; a hire car or taxi is recommended as no direct bus service runs to the venue.
- The festival takes place outdoors; light summer clothing is suitable as August nights on Kefalonia are warm and dry.
- Arrive early: the Fragata grounds fill up quickly once the festivities begin.
- Book accommodation in Argostoli or Lassi well in advance, as August is peak season on the island.
- Combine the festival with a daytime visit to the Robola Wine Cooperative in the Omala Valley for a cellar tour and wine tasting.
