Event Details

What Is the Romería de la Virgen de la Cabeza?

The Romería de la Virgen de la Cabeza in Andújar (Jaén province, Andalusia) is considered Spain's oldest pilgrimage, with roots dating back to the 13th century. It also ranks among the largest romerías and religious gatherings in Europe: around 500,000 pilgrims, horse riders and visitors travel into the Sierra de Andújar to honor the patron saint, affectionately known as "La Morenita". Since 1980 it has held the title Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional.

When Does the Romería Take Place in Andújar in 2027?

The pilgrimage is traditionally held on the last Sunday of April. In 2027 that date falls on Sunday, 25 April 2027. Celebrations already begin on the preceding Thursday with a floral offering to the Virgin in Andújar, followed on Friday by the great horse parade and the official reception of brotherhoods arriving from across Spain. The climax is the procession of the statue around the shrine on Sunday.

How Does the Program Unfold?

On Thursday afternoon, a procession moves from the chapel on Calle Ollerías to Plaza de España, where the floral offering to the Virgen de la Cabeza takes place. On Friday, numerous brotherhoods (Cofradías) arrive from all over Spain on horseback, by mule or on decorated carts and are officially welcomed by the city of Andújar. Through the night before Sunday, singing and dancing continue at the shrine until dawn; on Sunday itself, the statue of the Virgen de la Cabeza is carried in a moving procession around the shrine, with pilgrims reaching out to touch it with a piece of clothing.

How to Get to Andújar and the Shrine

Andújar sits on the A4 motorway between Córdoba and Jaén and is easily reached by car. The shrine itself lies about 32 kilometers north of the city, deep within the Sierra de Andújar Natural Park; many pilgrims cover this stretch on horseback, by cart or on foot. During the Romería a shuttle service is usually set up between Andújar and the shrine, since traffic in the mountains is heavily restricted that weekend.

How Much Does It Cost?

Taking part in the Romería is free, as it is a popular religious celebration without an entrance fee. Costs arise only for accommodation (rooms in Andújar are booked out months in advance), food, and possibly a shuttle seat or camping spot near the shrine.

Practical Tips for Visitors

  • Book accommodation in or near Andújar very early, as the town is fully booked during the Romería.
  • Bring comfortable clothing and sturdy footwear, since long stretches in the Sierra are covered on foot.
  • Plan your own camping gear if staying near the shrine, as many pilgrims camp there overnight.
  • The night from Saturday to Sunday is especially lively; those seeking quiet should avoid these hours.
  • Bring water and sun protection, as most events take place outdoors.
