Event Details

Welcome to the 2027 Rouketopolemos in Vrontados

On the night of Orthodox Holy Saturday, 1 May 2027 (Orthodox Easter Sunday falls on 2 May in 2027), the small town of Vrontados on the Greek island of Chios turns into a truly unique spectacle. The Rouketopolemos (literally "rocket war") is a centuries old Easter tradition in which two rival parish churches fire tens of thousands of homemade rockets at each other. The goal is to hit the opposing church's bell tower; an official winner is never declared, which is exactly why the rivalry lives on year after year.

Highlights

  • Two rival parishes: Agios Markos and Panagia Erithiani, perched on opposite hills of Vrontados
  • Tens of thousands of handmade rockets light up the night sky at the same time
  • The climax comes at midnight, timed with the proclamation of the Resurrection
  • One of Greece's most singular and spectacular Easter traditions
  • According to legend, the custom dates back to the Ottoman era

Program

The Rouketopolemos traditionally takes place on the night between Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday. As soon as the church bells announce the Resurrection at midnight, the actual "war" begins: from both hills, thousands of rockets are fired simultaneously toward the opposing church. The spectacle continues into the early hours of Easter Sunday; afterward, hits on the bell tower are traditionally counted, though both parishes usually end up claiming victory.

Tickets

The Rouketopolemos is free to watch; no ticket is required. In recent years, however, the event has repeatedly raised safety concerns due to incidents involving homemade rockets, and local authorities and parishes occasionally discuss stricter rules or a more controlled format. It is worth checking current guidance from local authorities before traveling.

Visitor Tips

  • Keep a safe distance; good vantage points are the surrounding hills and rooftops, away from the direct line of fire between the two churches.
  • Wear sturdy, ideally fire resistant clothing, as sparks and falling rocket debris are common.
  • Book accommodation in Chios Town or Vrontados months in advance, since the event is internationally known and in high demand.
  • Only bring children with extra caution; the event is considered potentially dangerous.
  • The drive from Chios Town to Vrontados takes about ten minutes by car or taxi.
