Welcome to the Schmalkalden Herrscheklasmarkt 2026
From November 28 to December 20, 2026, the Altmarkt square in the Thuringian half timbered town of Schmalkalden turns into a small but especially charming Christmas market. Surrounded by restored half timbered houses, St George's town church and Renaissance era Wilhelmsburg Castle, it creates an Advent backdrop that feels wonderfully compact and intimate.
Schmalkalden's Christmas Markets at a Glance
Schmalkalder Herrscheklasmarkt: The Traditional Market at Altmarkt Square
The Herrscheklasmarkt is the town's main Christmas market and takes its unusual name from Saint Nicholas, who over time became known locally as Herrscheklas. Around the illuminated Christmas tree at Altmarkt Square, wooden stalls offer Thuringian specialties, mulled wine and winter crafts, complemented by a stage program and activities for children. 2026 dates: November 28 to December 20, including a special shopping Sunday on November 29 and a craft market at the town hall on December 5 and 6.
Historic Christmas Market at Wilhelmsburg Castle: Medieval Charm Above the Old Town
Overlooking the Herrscheklasmarkt, a second, medieval themed Christmas market traditionally takes place in the setting of Wilhelmsburg Castle, featuring knight performances, historic crafts and market life against a Renaissance backdrop. Due to extensive construction work at the castle, this market was recently paused, and whether it returns in its usual form in 2026 had not been officially confirmed at the time of research. Visitors interested in this market should check announcements from the Wilhelmsburg Castle Museum before planning a visit.
