Schwerin’s Christmas market is billed as the “Stern im Norden” (Star of the North) and is one of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s most photogenic Advent settings: a UNESCO palace on an island, the Pfaffenteich lake, a brick cathedral and a fully lit old town. The state capital and Schweriner Weihnachtsmarkt GmbH schedule the 2026 season from 23 November to 30 December – the traditional window from the Monday before the first Sunday of Advent through 30 December. Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026

Stern im Norden is a district-wide market, not a single square. Opening day usually brings a parade from the south shore of the Pfaffenteich along Mecklenburgstraße to Altstädtischer Markt, where the tree and stage host the official start. Last season Santa held a daily afternoon slot on that stage (15:30 or 16:00 – check weihnachtsmarkt-schwerin.de for 2026 minutes). Expect live music in the lanes, a stollen cutting, rides and the fairy-tale tent. The market closes on 24 and 25 December so stallholders can keep Christmas. The weather-independent ice rink outlasts the stalls; in 2025/26 it ran into mid-January (also closed on 31 December). The 2026/27 closing date had not been posted as of September 2026.

Food and drink follow the German classics: red and white mulled wine (winemaker cups cost more), baked-apple punch, fire tongs punch, roasted almonds, Mutzen, chestnuts, sausage and stuffed bread. Mecklenburgstraße is the axis with covered seating; Schlossstraße and Marienplatz link the market to the malls. For castle views, add the Burggarten and lakeshore – the palace is the mid-December court market, not the main city fair.

Altstädtischer Markt – heart of the Star of the North

Locals meet under the big Nordmann fir. Here you find the pyramid visible from afar, the children’s carousel, the nativity and the stage. Mulled wine, egg punch and cocoa make it the default rendezvous. The opening parade ends here, and so does Santa. Everything is walkable from Tourist Information at Am Markt 14. After dark the façades pick up the lights – Schwerin’s best postcard set after the castle itself.

Schlachtermarkt and the Stadtwerke fairy-tale tent

One passage from the main square, Schlachtermarkt is smaller and more family-scale: compact huts, food, wood carvings and a fire pit. The Stadtwerke fairy-tale tent is the craft-and-play stop for children (weekday afternoons and weekend midday last season; a mid-December closed day is typical). With small kids, do Schlachtermarkt first, then the Pfaffenteich ice and wheel.

Pfaffenteich: ice rink, ferris wheel and alpine hut

The south shore is the winter-wonderland wing. The artificial ice rink works above freezing and adds ice hockey and ice-stock sport, plus a lounge. In 2025 an hour cost 5 EUR for children up to 15 and 7 EUR from age 16, a family skate (max. two adults plus three children) 20 EUR, 10-visit cards 45/60 EUR, skate hire 5 EUR – confirm 2026 tariffs on site. The ferris wheel (last 5 EUR for four to five loops) looks over lights, water and the old town. The alpine hut next door serves hot drinks. Ice hours last season: daily until 22:00, later than the rest of the market.

Mecklenburgstraße, Schlossstraße and Marienplatz

Mecklenburgstraße is the main promenade: restored townhouses, fairy-tale huts under light arches, crafts, snacks and covered high tables. Schlossstraße leads to Marienplatz with galleries, car parks and trams – the practical start or finish for many visitors. A few fairy-tale huts also sit on Helenenstraße. Walking the full circuit without ice or castle takes about an hour; with stops, plan half a day.

Höfische Weihnacht at Schwerin Castle

From mid-December the courtyard of the UNESCO palace (Lennéstraße 1) becomes a small court Christmas village: red and white mulled wine, crafts, stage music and a children’s programme, with the state parliament, castle association, chapel and museum involved. Travel packages list 2026 hours as 11:00–21:00 daily; the exact day span (around ten mid-December days in past years) is usually posted by Schloss Schwerin in the autumn. Extra 2026 palace tours “Schlösser im Advent / Christmas at Court” run on 5, 6, 12 and 13 December at 13:30. The castle market is the photographic crown, not a substitute for the city stalls.

Advent im Hof at Schleswig-Holstein-Haus

The cultural forum in the Schelfstadt hosts Advent im Hof on 28 and 29 November 2026, listed on the city’s official market calendar. Crafts in courtyard and galleries, puppet theatre, making tables, letters to Santa, live music, coffee, venison sausage, mulled wine and kids’ punch. In 2025 admission was 2 EUR, free for visitors up to 18 (evening reading extra). Typical hours: Saturday about 11:00–18:00/19:00, Sunday 11:00–17:00. A quieter, handmade counterpoint to Stern im Norden, walkable through the Schelfstadt.

wintersonnenWERKE at the Schwerin-Mueß Open-Air Museum

On the fourth Advent weekend, 19 and 20 December 2026, the open-air museum (Alte Crivitzer Landstraße 13, 19063 Schwerin) stages the wintersonnenWERKE craft market. Farmhouses and barns are lit; expect a working forge, historic interpreters, Low German, fireside stories, a carousel, mulled wine and sausage. Saturday 11:00–19:00, Sunday 10:00–17:00. Admission: 2 EUR from 1.40 m height, including a raffle ticket; shorter visitors free. A good Sunday escape when the old town is packed – bus or car beyond the inner ring.

• Getting there: Deutsche Bahn to Schwerin Hauptbahnhof, then walk or bus/tram to Marienplatz. Hamburg is about an hour, Rostock similar, Berlin about two hours. Drivers: Schlosspark-Center, Marienplatzgalerie, Schweriner Höfe, Contipark Am Schloss, Altstadt car park (use the larger one) or P+R at Helios Kliniken. Advent weekends fill the inner-city garages fast.
• Weather and clothing: Lakes mean wind and rain. Waterproof shoes, layers, a hat. Pack spare socks for the ice rink. The Pfaffenteich shore is colder at night than the enclosed market square.
