From October 6 to 12, 2026, Kauppatori, Helsinki's Market Square, once again becomes the stage for Silakkamarkkinat, the long running Baltic herring market. Since 1743, fishers from across the Finnish archipelago have sailed their boats into the harbor, marking the traditional start of autumn in the Finnish capital.

Program and Schedule: What to Expect in 2026

Silakkamarkkinat traditionally opens on the first Sunday of October at 10am with a welcome speech aboard the sailing ship Vivan at Market Square. The same afternoon, at 4pm, the Baltic herring jury announces the winners in the categories Herring Surprise of the Year and Pickled Fish of the Year. Throughout the week, live music and a maritime side program keep visitors entertained while stalls sell fresh herring, smoked fish and other archipelago specialties. The market runs Sunday through Friday from 9am to 7pm, closing earlier on Saturday at 4pm.
