On 31 December 2026 and 1 January 2027, Aachen welcomes the new year around the Cathedral, Town Hall, Markt and Katschhof. The imperial city does not stage one single mega-festival; instead it offers open squares, theatre and club nights, the traditional New Year’s Eve run and a festive countdown in the historic centre. 31 December 2026 falls on a Thursday.

Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026/2027
The afternoon of 31 December 2026 starts on the streets: DLC Aachen hosts the traditional Silvesterlauf with distances of about 1.6 km, 4.8 km and 9.6 km. Start and finish are on the Markt; laps pass the Town Hall, Cathedral and Elisenbrunnen. In the evening the focus shifts to the squares and indoor venues. Markt and Katschhof are the main meeting points for the countdown beneath the lit facades of the Cathedral and Rathaus. The Aachen Christmas Market closes on 23 December 2026 and is not open on New Year’s Eve.
Cultural options include New Year’s Eve performances and a party in the Spiegel foyer of Theater Aachen (Beats & Bubbles, typically from 22:30; tickets are released by the theatre). Grenzlandtheater lists the year-end show “Gina & Glinda” on 31 December 2026. Hotels such as Parkhotel Quellenhof offer festive dinners. Many pubs and clubs in the old town celebrate into the night. No official city-wide fireworks spectacle has been announced. In recent years the City of Aachen has banned higher-rising fireworks inside the Grabenring and on Theaterplatz; check aachen.de shortly before the turn of the year for the 2026/2027 decree. Setting off fireworks next to churches, hospitals and fire-sensitive buildings remains forbidden. Spending New Year’s Eve on Markt, Katschhof and in the old town is free. The Silvesterlauf has recently cost around 19 to 20 euros for adults (the junior race is cheaper); register via dlc-aachen.de. Theatre and party tickets often range from about 19 to 35 euros; the theatre party has been advertised with a glass of sparkling wine included, with final 2026 prices published by Theater Aachen. The New Year’s Eve dinner at Parkhotel Quellenhof on 31 December 2026 is listed at 229 euros per person (reception at 19:30, including a champagne reception and DJ, without wine pairing). Club nights range from free entry to low two-digit euro prices. Buy tickets from the organisers, theateraachen.de, aachen-tourismus.de and standard box-office platforms. There is no single city pass covering every celebration.
Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Aachen
- Travel by train to Aachen Hauptbahnhof; Markt and the Cathedral are walkable or a short bus ride away. Drivers should use park-and-ride sites, as the centre is tight and partly closed on New Year’s Eve.
- Late December in Aachen is usually cold, often around freezing, with rain or sleet. Wear warm, waterproof layers, sturdy shoes and gloves.
- Hotels near the Cathedral, Markt and Monheimsallee sell out early. Book ahead if you combine a run, theatre night or gala dinner.
- Category F2 fireworks may be sold and used in Germany only on 31 December and 1 January and only by adults. Extra rules usually apply in the Grabenring and on Theaterplatz to protect historic buildings; read the latest notice on aachen.de.
- After midnight, trains, buses and taxis are in high demand. Plan your return early and watch city notices for street closures.
