• Bamberg sits on the Berlin–Munich ICE line. City buses and a walk of about 20 minutes link the main station with the old town. Drivers should use car parks such as the Altstadt-City garage under the tourist office at Geyerswoerthstrasse 5 rather than narrow lanes.
• Late December in Upper Franconia is often near freezing, with wind along the Regnitz and possible sleet. Wear waterproof shoes and layered clothing if you plan to stay outdoors until midnight.
• The compact World Heritage centre sells out quickly. Reserve hotels, guesthouses and apartments early; many properties add festive menus or a late check-out on 1 January.
• Read the city’s firework map just before 31 December. Ban zones cover private plots as well as streets. Only adults aged 18 and over may buy or set off class-II fireworks.
