Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Dusseldorf

• Getting there: Use S-Bahn, U-Bahn or tram to the main station or Heinrich-Heine-Allee; Burgplatz is a short walk. Driving is a poor choice: the Altstadt-Rheinufer garage and the bridges are congested around midnight.
• Weather and clothing: Late December on the Rhine is often wet, windy and near freezing. Wear sturdy waterproof shoes, warm layers and a windproof jacket. Glass bottles are impractical in dense crowds.
• Stay: Hotels in the Old Town, Carlstadt, Medienhafen and along Konigsallee sell out early. Book months ahead and expect New Year surcharges.
• Safety: Stay on marked squares and promenades, keep clear of illegal fireworks and follow police and city staff. Calmer views are often found at Medienhafen, the Lido footbridge and stretches away from the tightest Old Town alleys.
• After midnight: Many people leave Burgplatz quickly; allow extra time for trains, taxis and packed bars. On 1 January 2027 expect reduced opening hours and a quieter city.
