Fireworks are banned in the city centre and on the entire Münsterplatz (buffer zones around churches, hospitals and fire-sensitive buildings). Classic viewpoints are Kanonenplatz, Restaurant Dattler on Schlossberg, Lorettoberg, St. Ottilien, and higher ridges such as Schauinsland and Tuniberg. Arrive before 22:00 if you want a good spot.

Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Freiburg

• Arrive by train at Freiburg Hauptbahnhof, then use VAG trams and buses. New Year’s Eve runs on a special timetable: last tram out of the centre is often around 23:30 from Bertoldsbrunnen; the inner city is then closed for cleaning, with first direct connections early on 1 January.
• Late December in Freiburg is cold and frequently wet. Wear waterproof shoes, a hat and layers, especially on Schlossberg and Kanonenplatz.
• Old-town, station and Schlossberg hotels book out quickly. Reserve early or look at Wiehre, Stühlinger or Herdern.
• Private fireworks are allowed only on 31 December and 1 January and not in restricted zones; F2 rockets from age 18. Münsterplatz is a complete no-fireworks zone.
• For a quieter night, choose Lorettoberg, St. Ottilien or the vineyards below Jesuitenschloss Merzhausen instead of the busiest old-town lanes.
