Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026/2027
Heidelberg does not stage one single municipal midnight fireworks show comparable to the summer Castle Illumination. The New Year program is spread across public squares, classical concerts and ticketed evenings. Popular viewpoints at midnight include the Philosophers' Walk, the Old Bridge, Neckarwiese and the castle gardens – you may watch fireworks from the gardens, but you may not set off your own. Within built-up areas, private category F2 fireworks are generally permitted on 31 December and 1 January, but not next to churches, hospitals, children's or care homes, and not anywhere in the castle gardens.
The official concert program is built around waltz, operetta and Strauss: on 31 December 2026 the Heidelberg Philharmonic Orchestra under Dietger Holm performs works by Emmerich Kálmán and Johann, Josef and Eduard Strauss at Konzerthaus Stadthalle, Neckarstaden 24. The New Year's concert follows on 1 January 2027 at 18:00 in the Marguerre Hall. At the same time, club nights such as the party at halle02, dinner and party tickets at venues including Frauenbad and Schilling Roofbar, and Weisse Flotte boat departures from the Stadthalle landing stage fill the night. During the day the castle grounds are usually open, often with shorter hours; check Schloss Heidelberg shortly before 31 December 2026 for confirmed times.

Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Heidelberg
- Arrive by train at Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof, then continue by bus or tram into the Old Town (stops Bismarckplatz, Rathaus/Bergbahn, Stadthalle). Parking garages P6 and P8 are close to the concert hall; the Old Town is very busy on New Year's Eve.
- Late December in Heidelberg is cold and often wet and windy by the river. Wear layers, sturdy shoes and weatherproof clothing; bring extra gloves for the ice rink.
- Hotels in the Old Town, along the Neckar and below the castle book out early for the turn of the year. If you combine concerts or galas with your stay, reserve rooms and tickets together.
- Do not set off fireworks in the castle gardens. Keep safe distances, consider pets and follow guidance from the Heidelberg fire service.
- After midnight expect crowded pedestrian streets and limited traffic around the Old Bridge. Plan the return trip with public transport or a pre-booked taxi.
