Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026/2027

The Silvestermarkt on Neuer Platz is the public centrepiece. In recent years stalls have usually opened from 10:00 to 19:00, with food and drink stands until 23:00; on 31 December the market opens earlier (officially from 09:00) and stays open for the open-air party through midnight. 30 December is traditionally Bauernsilvester, a folk evening with fortune-telling customs such as the farmers’ oracle. On 31 December the square becomes an open-air stage, with live music and DJs through the countdown. The exact 2026 lineup is typically announced later in autumn.

Additional options often include a cathedral concert (in previous years at 19:00, tickets around 15 to 19 euros) plus club nights and theatre. Klagenfurt does not have a long-established official city fireworks show. After a chaotic 2025/2026 New Year’s night, the city discussed tighter rules or a municipal display instead of private rockets. Check the City of Klagenfurt shortly before 31 December 2026 for the final fireworks rules. Private F2 fireworks have recently been limited to a one-hour window around midnight.

Tickets & Admission for New Year's Eve Klagenfurt

The market and the open-air celebration on Neuer Platz are free to enter. You pay only for food, drinks, souvenirs and any permitted table or fountain fireworks sold on site. Optional add-ons cost extra: the cathedral concert was recently about 15 euros in advance and 19 euros at the door; the City Parish Tower charged 6 euros for adults on previous New Year’s Eve openings (4 euros reduced, half price with the Wörthersee Plus Card). Club parties and restaurant menus have their own prices and often require booking. Official updates: visitklagenfurt.at and klagenfurt.at/maerkte.

Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Klagenfurt

  • Getting there: Neuer Platz is in the pedestrian old town. The Lindwurm underground car park at Neuer Platz 13a sits directly under the market. Trains and buses arrive at Klagenfurt Hauptbahnhof, a short walk or ride from the centre. Klagenfurt Airport (KLU) is the nearest airport.
  • Weather and clothing: Late December in Klagenfurt is usually cold, often around or below freezing, with possible snow. Wear layers, sturdy shoes and a weatherproof coat for the outdoor countdown.
  • Stay: Old-town and lakeside hotels sell out around New Year. Book early and expect peak-season rates.
  • Fireworks: Keep to the permitted time window and distance rules near churches, hospitals and care homes. Fines can be high. Be considerate of pets, children and residents.
  • Families: Use the free children’s rides on 31 December in the afternoon before the square turns into a party zone. For midnight, bring warm clothes and hearing protection for kids.
