Welcome to the New Year's Eve and New Year 2026/2027 in Liberec

Spend New Year's Eve 2026 and New Year's Day 2027 in Liberec on Dr. Edvard Benes Square, in front of the neo-Renaissance Town Hall. The city has not staged an official midnight fireworks display for years; instead, locals and visitors gather informally on the lit square and in bars, restaurants and hotels. On 1 January the traditional New Year's climb of Jested (1,012 m) usually follows.

Highlights & Attractions at New Year's Eve and New Year in Liberec

  • Free open-air gathering in front of the historic Town Hall on Dr. Edvard Benes Square
  • Illuminated neo-Renaissance facade, Neptune Fountain and a winter city-centre mood
  • Private fireworks only in the legal window (31 December 16:00 to 1 January 03:00)
  • No municipal grand fireworks show; the city has deliberately dropped the tradition
  • Gala dinners and entertainment packages in hotels such as Pytloun Grand Hotel Imperial
  • Traditional New Year's hike up Jested on 1 January (start in Horni Hanychov)
  • Short trip to organised New Year fireworks in nearby towns such as Straz nad Nisou

Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026/2027

As of September 2026 the city had not published a fixed stage programme for New Year's Eve 2026/2027. The usual pattern is an open evening on the Town Hall square: a walk through the lit centre, a midnight toast in cafes, pubs and hotels, and scattered private fireworks outside year-round no-go zones (including a 250-metre buffer around hospitals, care homes, animal shelters and zoos). Category F1 items such as sparklers remain less restricted. Night quiet hours apply from 02:00 to 06:00, when loud pyrotechnics must stop.

1 January in Liberec is for the hills. The Czech Tourist Club (TJ Lokomotiva Liberec) has organised the New Year's climb of Jested for more than 50 years. The 51st edition took place on 1 January 2026; 1 January 2027 is the expected date for the next edition, though exact check-in times are usually confirmed only in December. In recent years registration ran from 08:30 to 10:30 at the Horni Hanychov tram terminus; the blue trail covers about 4 to 5 km to the summit and runs in all weather. Check visitliberec.eu for concerts, ice skating and other winter dates.

Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Liberec

  • Arrive by train to Liberec (direct and connecting services from Prague); use tram and bus in town. For the Jested climb take the tram to Horni Hanychov or the cable car.
  • Late December and early January are cold, often with snow and strong wind on Jested; pack layered clothing, winter boots and gloves.
  • Reserve rooms near the square and New Year hotel packages early; the turn of the year fills up quickly.
  • Set off fireworks only in the permitted hours and outside ban zones; be considerate of children, older residents and animals, and do not leave litter on the square.
  • Confirm ban-zone maps, winter opening hours and trail conditions at the info centre next to the Town Hall or on visitliberec.eu and liberec.cz.
