The public New Year's Eve in Mons has followed a stable pattern for several years: on 31 December the winter market closes earlier in the afternoon, Grand-Place is prepared for the night, and the square remains accessible on foot via the main streets. In recent editions the dance party ran from about 22:00 to 02:00, with fireworks at midnight as the climax. For 2026/2027 the DJ, exact stage times and any extra shows have not been officially announced yet. Hotels and restaurants also offer paid réveillon menus and buffets; those dinners are separate from the free city event on Grand-Place.
Private fireworks are generally banned across Mons. The city and Mons-Quévy police secure the area around Grand-Place, Place Léopold and Marché aux Herbes; previous years banned large backpacks from the early evening. Tickets & Admission for New Year's Eve Mons
The official city New Year's Eve on Grand-Place has been free of charge and ticket-free in documented recent editions. Food and drinks at the chalets, and hotel or restaurant réveillon dinners, are paid separately in euro. Book early if you want a sit-down New Year menu with live music or a DJ. Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Mons
- Getting there: Mons sits on the Brussels–Paris rail line; the station opens onto Place Léopold, a short walk from Grand-Place. If you drive, use city-centre car parks: Grand-Place is closed to traffic on New Year's Eve.
- Weather and clothing: Late December in Wallonia is cold, often near freezing, with wind and possible rain. Wear layers, sturdy shoes and a waterproof jacket; you will stand outdoors for a long time.
- Stay: Rooms around Grand-Place, Place Léopold and the station sell out quickly. Reserve early, including at hotels that sell réveillon packages such as Van der Valk Mons.
- Safety: Bring only a small bag, follow barriers and staff, and stay out of the fireworks launch zone on Rue de Nimy. Do not set off private fireworks.
- On the night: Arrive before 22:00 if you want time for the lights, the belfry backdrop and the winter streets. Some venues stay open after midnight; 1 January is a public holiday in Belgium and many shops remain closed.
