From 31 December 2026 to 1 January 2027, Salzburg’s baroque Old Town becomes the stage for New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Around Cathedral Square, Residenzplatz and Kapitelplatz, along the Salzach and beneath Hohensalzburg Fortress, the city of Mozart mixes winter lights, classical music and an official midnight fireworks display. Visitors planning a concert in the Marble Hall of Mirabell Palace or an elegant gala dinner will find the same historic, festive winter setting.

Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026/2027

The public Old Town celebration starts on 31 December 2026 at 14:00 on Kapitelplatz. The lineup includes a live broadcast of Sydney’s fireworks, the Schnalzergruppe Abtenau, the Musikum Big Band and the Lungau Big Band, a family-friendly smoke display in the afternoon, and gun salutes from the fortress at 16:00. At 17:00 the festive cathedral service is shown on screen; at 18:00 all bells ring. The countdown is at 23:59, followed at midnight by a music-choreographed fireworks display from Hohensalzburg Fortress. Private firecrackers and consumer fireworks are banned throughout the city.

For a classical evening, book a Silvester gala in the Marble Hall of Mirabell Palace (performances include 17:00 and 20:00), a Mozart dinner concert in the Baroque Hall of St. Peter, or a fortress gala with concert and champagne reception for the fireworks. On 1 January 2027 the free Kapitelplatz program resumes at 11:00 with “All Waltzes,” folk music, piano and the Lungau Big Band, ending at 18:00. Tickets & Admission for New Year's Eve Salzburg

Admission to the public program on Kapitelplatz is free. Concert tickets typically cost about 42 to 46 EUR for Mirabell Palace concerts and 59 to 179 EUR for New Year’s concerts at the Grosses Festspielhaus. Mozart dinner concerts at St. Peter are sold in several categories, often from around 97 EUR; more elaborate fortress gala dinners with concert commonly range from about 190 to 269 EUR. Hotel packages including overnight stay, dinner and sometimes a fortress concert start at around 624 EUR per person according to Tourismus Salzburg. Drinks are usually extra at dinner concerts. Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Salzburg

• Arrive by train at Salzburg Hauptbahnhof, then walk or take a bus into the compact, largely pedestrian Old Town. Salzburg Airport (SZG) is only a short ride away. Use Old Town car parks; many streets close and the Staatsbrücke is typically blocked to traffic from 23:00.
• Late December is cold, often around freezing, with possible snow or ice. Wear layers, sturdy winter shoes, a hat and gloves; bring a thermos and ear protection for the outdoor fireworks.
• Hotels in the Old Town, near Mirabell Palace and along the Salzach book up quickly. Reserve rooms and gala dinners several months ahead.
• Good views of the fortress fireworks include Kapitelplatz, Residenzplatz, the right bank of the Salzach, Mönchsberg and Kapuzinerberg. Do not bring private fireworks.
• Combine the free square program with a Mirabell concert or a St. Peter dinner; walking times between venues are short through the lit baroque streets.
