Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026/2027

Festive market life continues across the turn of the year, with Marktplatz and Theaterplatz remaining the main outdoor stages through 3 January 2027. According to the city notice, Frauenplan, Schillerstraße and Herderplatz are scheduled through 29 December 2026. From 30 December 2026 stall opening hours are shortened to 11:00–18:00. Parts of the market are typically closed on 24 December, 25 December and 1 January; confirm closing days on weimar.de shortly before your visit.

The cultural highlight on 31 December 2026 is the Staatskapelle Weimar concert at the Weimarhalle (UNESCO-Platz 1). “Nessun Dorma!” mixes Italian opera (Verdi, Bellini, Puccini, Mascagni) with operetta numbers. The Deutsches Nationaltheater at Theaterplatz 2 lists additional performances that day. On 1 January 2027 the Herderkirche (Stadtkirche St. Peter und Paul, Herderplatz 8) hosts the New Year concert “… von Nymphen und Hirten” at 16:00; published ticket prices are 15 / 20 / 25 euros. A further “Nessun Dorma!” concert is listed for 1 January 2027 at 18:00 in the Weimarhalle. There is no official large-scale municipal fireworks show on the historic squares.

Tickets & Admission for New Year's Eve Weimar

Access to the Christmas market squares and public New Year gatherings is free. Concerts, theatre, the ice rink and gala dinners are ticketed. The Herderkirche New Year concert is priced at 15, 20 and 25 euros. Orchestra and theatre tickets at the Staatskapelle and DNT typically ranged from about 15 to 75 euros in the last published price groups, depending on seat category; New Year’s Eve and New Year performances are often excluded from subscriptions. Confirm 2026/2027 seat prices only via the theatre box office, dnt-weimar.de or Tourist Information Weimar at Markt 4. Hotel galas (including Hotel Elephant) and multi-night packages often start above 100 euros for dinner alone and rise substantially with accommodation.

Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Weimar

  • Weimar is easy to reach by regional train. Marktplatz, Theaterplatz and the Weimarhalle are walkable from the main station or a short city-bus ride. On New Year’s Eve buses often run a Saturday or special timetable with a break around midnight – check the local operator before you travel.
  • Late December in Thuringia is cold, often frosty and damp. Wear warm shoes, layers and gloves for the ice rink, market streets and any time spent outdoors after dark.
  • Old-town hotels and well-known houses such as Elephant, the Congress Hotel and Kaiserin Augusta sell out quickly. Book early and allow for Weimar’s local culture tax.
  • Until New Year 2026/2027, category F2 fireworks are banned in the historic old town, including Theaterplatz, Schillerstraße, Frauenplan, Marktplatz, the City Palace area, Herderplatz and Scherfgasse. Do not set off consumer fireworks there. Informal crowds may gather on squares such as Goetheplatz, which still see a strong police presence.
  • Reserve Staatskapelle and DNT tickets early. Recheck weimar.de and dnt-weimar.de just before arrival for market hours, closing days and the final 31 December stage schedule, as details can still change.
