Welcome to the Vienna Silvesterpfad 2026
On 31 December 2026, Vienna's city center turns into a giant open air stage for the 35th time. The Vienna Silvesterpfad (New Year's Eve Trail) is one of Europe's largest and most popular New Year's celebrations; around Rathausplatz, Freyung, Am Hof, Graben, Stephansplatz, Kärntner Straße and Neuer Markt, as well as at Riesenradplatz in the Prater, visitors can enjoy more than 100 hours of program with free admission. The turn of the year 2026/2027 also marks the close of Vienna's year as host city of the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest.

Program
The Silvesterpfad starts in the early afternoon around 2:00 PM with children's activities, DJ sets and early live acts across the different squares. In the evening, bigger bands and show programs take over the stages; the main stage at Rathausplatz traditionally offers the most elaborate program of the night. At the stroke of midnight, the Pummerin, the famous bell of St. Stephen's Cathedral, rings in the new year, accompanied by the Danube Waltz on every stage. Out of consideration for people, animals and the environment, the City of Vienna deliberately does without a central fireworks display at the official Silvesterpfad; the musical midnight ceremony forms the emotional highlight instead. For a quieter alternative near Schönbrunn Palace, the extensive palace park is open and free year round, offering a calmer setting for a New Year's Eve walk away from the biggest crowds.
Tickets
The Vienna Silvesterpfad is entirely free and requires no registration or tickets. Those who prefer a more formal way to celebrate can choose from paid options such as the New Year's Eve gala at Vienna City Hall, the traditional performance of "Die Fledermaus" at the Vienna State Opera, or one of the city's New Year's balls; these require separate tickets booked in advance.
Visitor Tips
- Arrive in the early afternoon, as popular areas like Stephansplatz, Graben and Kärntner Straße can reach capacity as early as 11:00 PM.
- Pick one main area to stay in rather than trying to hop between several stations right before midnight.
- Traveling by public transport is strongly recommended, as street closures apply across the city center.
- Private category F2 fireworks are generally prohibited within Vienna's city area.
- Dress warmly, as the celebrations take place outdoors in winter temperatures.
