Welcome to the New Year Celebrations 2026/2027 in Sofia
Sofia welcomes 2027 in the historic centre: the municipal open-air New Year concert is traditionally held on 31 December 2026 at Knyaz Alexander I Square (Battenberg Square). Festive lights wrap Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and Vitosha Boulevard, then Balkan nightlife takes over the clubs after midnight. The official 2026/2027 artist line-up had not been published as of late August 2026; Sofia Municipality usually confirms names and stage times in December.
Highlights & Attractions at New Year Celebrations in Sofia
- Free municipal concert on Knyaz Alexander I Square, in recent years starting around 21:30
- Holiday lighting on Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the surrounding squares
- Vitosha Boulevard as the city’s pedestrian spine of bars, terraces and midnight crowds
- Recent editions replaced a large fireworks barrage with a light or drone show at midnight (2026/2027 format still unconfirmed)
- Club circuit ranging from pop-folk and live bands to techno after the square concert
- Hotel galas and Sofia Opera festive performances in the same week
- Extended metro, tram and bus services that, in previous years, ran into the early hours of 1 January

Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026/2027
The public focal point is Knyaz Alexander I Square 1, 1000 Sofia. In 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 the city concert began at 21:30, featured well-known Bulgarian pop and rock acts, crossed midnight and used a light show instead of a full fireworks display. The same pattern is likely for 2026/2027, but start time and performers are not yet official. Recheck sofia.bg and visitsofia.bg in December.
After midnight the crowd moves to Vitosha Boulevard and indoor venues. Yalta Club is the long-running techno address; other centre spots such as Mixtape 5 publish one-off New Year bills. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is a backdrop and photo stop rather than a concert stage. For classical programming, watch the Sofia Opera and Ballet holiday calendar separately; late-December galas often sell out.
Tickets & Admission for New Year Celebrations Sofia
Entry to the municipal square concert has been free in recent years, and no paid ticketing for the plaza has been announced for 2026/2027. Club nights, hotel dinners and opera galas are ticketed on their own. Exact 2026/2027 club prices are not out yet; on New Year’s Eve 2025/2026 covers typically ranged from about EUR 15 to EUR 200 depending on the room. Buy club tickets only after organisers post the bill; use sofia.bg for the official square event.
Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Sofia
- Stay in the centre (Sredets, Oborishte, near Vitosha Boulevard or the square). Roads around the concert site are usually closed on the evening of 31 December, and taxis become scarce after midnight.
- Late December in Sofia is cold, often around or below freezing; wear layers, sturdy shoes and a hat if you plan to stay outdoors for the concert.
- Central hotels fill early for New Year’s Eve; book weeks ahead and expect minimum-stay rules.
- Check club line-ups and door policies in December; many parties are pre-sale only.
- Private fireworks have been discouraged at the square in recent years while the city used light shows. Follow the latest municipality and police notices.
