St. Gallen’s Christmas market now operates as Sternenmarkt, from 26 November to 24 December 2026 on Gallusplatz, beside the UNESCO Abbey District and cathedral. The season opens with Sternissage on 26 November 2026, 18:30–19:30, on Marktgasse – the switch-on of the AllerStern city lights.

Sternenmarkt is not a mega-fair. It is the core of the Sternenstadt brand: light, old town, and a contained hut market at the cathedral. In 2025 more than two dozen chalets stood on Gallusplatz; organisers have said 2026 will add makers and decoration. Food stays at Vadian so Gallusplatz is not only a snack court. Sternissage is the public light moment. The market ends on 24 December; the stars often hang until 6 January.

The 2026 frame programme is meant to grow: more music, family events beyond Gallusplatz, closer work with neighbourhood shops. Traditions such as the Chlausritt remain. Concert and family dates land on sternenstadt.ch in autumn. Food is Swiss market fare – mulled wine, punch, regional snacks. Entry stays 0 EUR.

Sternenmarkt on Gallusplatz in St. Gallen

Gallusplatz has been the main site since 2025, chosen for the cathedral and Abbey District. The move from Bohl was judged a success; the weak point was too little craft – that is the 2026 fix. During market hours Gallusplatz is closed to through traffic (2025: 11:00–19:00, weekends until 18:00); bus line 11 is diverted and the Stiftsbezirk and Karlstor stops drop out. From St. Gallen station it is about a ten-minute walk through the old town.

Mulled wine and food at the Vadian monument

Marktplatz, Bohl and Bärenplatz around the Vadian monument remain the food pole, with longer hours than Gallusplatz and Thursday late shopping. After the Abbey District, this is where you end up for punch – and for Marktgasse shops. Gallusplatz is the postcard; Vadian is the evening table.

Christkindlimarkt St. Gallen – the two-day makers’ market

Separate from Sternenmarkt, the Christkindlimarkt still runs on two Advent days (29 November and 13 December in 2025) with private makers in the lanes around Gallusplatz, on Grüningerplatz and in Weber-, Bank- and Rosengasse. 2026 dates were not yet fixed in September. Go then if you want one-offs rather than standard huts.

UNESCO Abbey District and AllerStern in St. Gallen

The Abbey District, cathedral and Abbey Library sit next to the market. Klosterplatz holds the city tree; the lanes sit under AllerStern. Skipping the abbey wastes the strongest setting in Eastern Switzerland. Outdoor space is free; the library has its own tickets and hours.

Christkindlimärt Rapperswil-Jona on Lake Zurich

About 45 minutes by train: one of Switzerland’s largest Christmas markets, 3–6, 9–13 and 17–20 December 2026, lakeshore plus old town, over 200 stalls at the Grand Market, castle above the water. Pair it with Sternenmarkt as a two-stop day.

Adventsmarkt Bischofszell – 30th edition in 2026

27–29 November 2026 in Bischofszell’s historic centre (Thurgau), 120-plus stalls, opening Friday 18:00 at the town hall with Samichlaus and angel girls. Free entry. Easy from St. Gallen via Gossau or Weinfelden – the classic first-Advent weekend before Sternenmarkt hits full December.

Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in St. Gallen

• Getting there: SBB to St. Gallen, then walk (about 10 minutes to Gallusplatz). Public transport wins because Gallusplatz is closed to through traffic during market hours. Dense trains from Zurich, Winterthur, Rorschach and Constance. Use edge-of-town car parks, not the old town.
• Weather: Eastern Swiss Advent means rain, Föhn or Bise more often than snow. Waterproof shoes and layers. Gallusplatz sits open in front of the cathedral – windier than the lanes.
• Stay: Book old-town hotels near the abbey and Marktplatz early, especially Sternissage and Advent weekends. Quieter beds: Herisau, Rorschach or Arbon.
• While you are there: Abbey Library, Textile Museum, Multergasse shopping, dinner at Vadian. The market itself is a 60–90 minute loop – the rest of the time belongs to the Abbey District.
• When to go: Weekdays after 16:00 when the stars come on; Saturdays are busier. Christmas Eve is afternoon only. For crafts, wait for the two Christkindlimarkt dates once they are published.
