Welcome to the Starchevata Kukeri Carnival 2027 in Razlog
The international Kukeri Carnival “Starchevata” in Razlog is one of the most distinctive mask festivals in the Pirin Mountains. Organised by Razlog Municipality under the Federation of European Carnival Cities (FECC), it brings Kukeri and carnival groups from Bulgaria and abroad to the central Preobrazhenie Square. Exact dates for 2027 have not been published yet; in recent years the international edition has fallen in mid-January (for example 17–18 January 2025). Separately, every year on 1 January the same town holds its traditional local Starchevata. Check razlog.bg for official announcements.
Highlights & Attractions at Starchevata in Razlog
- Living Kukeri tradition: heavy animal skins, tall pointed masks and bells (often 40–50 kg) used to drive away evil forces and call in fertility for the new year.
- The local “chaushi” from Razlog’s seven neighbourhoods – a regional form of Kukeri with distinctive costumes and ritual dances.
- International parade: groups from across Bulgaria and neighbouring countries such as North Macedonia and Serbia, and occasionally further afield in Europe.
- The great festive horo: colourful folk costumes, drums (tapan) and zurnas, often with whole families – from children to elders – joining the chain dance.
- Opening programme with folklore, fire show and local specialities (as in the 2025 edition on the evening before the main parade).
- Free for spectators: no admission charge, open viewing from Preobrazhenie Square and the surrounding streets.
- UNESCO-related context: Kukeri customs form part of Bulgaria’s intangible cultural heritage; Razlog has upheld the tradition as an FECC member since the 1990s.
Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2027
The 2027 programme is not yet released. The international Starchevata edition typically runs over two days: an opening evening with a local presentation of Razlog’s tradition, often including a fire show and side programme; the following day, from around 10:00, the main parade of registered groups on Preobrazhenie Square, lasting into the afternoon (until about 16:00 in 2025). A jury usually scores presentation, costumes and regional character – the event is both festive and competitive.
Independently, every 1 January the local Starchevata takes place: chaushi and costumed participants from the seven mahali process through town and meet for the big horo on the central square. Visitors aiming for both in 2027 should watch New Year’s Day and the (still to be announced) mid-January international dates on razlog.bg and municipal channels.

Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Razlog
- Getting there: Razlog sits in the Razlog Valley (Blagoevgrad Province), about 6 km from Bansko and roughly 2–2.5 hours by car from Sofia via the A3/E79 and regional roads. Buses from Sofia and Blagoevgrad are common; in winter allow for snow and ice.
- Weather and clothing: January in Razlog is cold – daytime highs often around 0 to 3 °C, nights well below freezing, with possible snow. Pack warm layers, sturdy waterproof shoes and gloves; expect long periods standing outdoors.
- Where to stay: Razlog and especially nearby Bansko offer hotels, guesthouses and apartments. Book early around carnival time and the ski season; the municipality and local tourism pages list options in the area.
- On site: Preobrazhenie Square is the main stage – arrive early for a clear view of masks and the parade. Photography is normal, but give dancers and heavy costumes respectful space.
- Combine the trip: many visitors pair Starchevata with skiing in Bansko or other Kukeri events in the region (e.g. Surva in Pernik – check those dates separately). Rely on razlog.bg and Razlog Municipality for official information.
