Welcome to the Sternadvent with Winter Market 2026 in Salzburg
From November 19, 2026 to January 6, 2027, the Sternarkaden courtyard between Getreidegasse and Griesgasse in Salzburg's Old Town turns into one of the calmest and most atmospheric Christmas markets in the city. Unlike the larger Christkindlmarkt on the cathedral square or the market on Mirabellplatz, the Sternadvent is tucked away inside a historic courtyard next to the Sternbräu, giving it a particularly intimate and festive character.

Program and Schedule: What to Expect in Salzburg
Regular opening hours are Sunday through Thursday from 11:00 to 19:00 and Friday and Saturday from 11:00 to 20:30. On Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve (December 24 and 31) the market opens from 10:00 to 15:00, and from January 1 to 6 it opens daily from 11:00 to 18:00. A detailed stage or supporting program for the 2026/27 edition had not yet been published at the time of research.

Salzburg Christkindlmarkt at Domplatz and Residenzplatz
Just a short walk from the Sternadvent lies the city's most famous Christmas market. The Salzburg Christkindlmarkt at Domplatz and Residenzplatz is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Europe, with roots tracing back to 1491. For the 2026/27 season it runs from November 19, 2026 to January 1, 2027, with around 100 stalls set against the backdrop of the cathedral, the Residenz and Hohensalzburg Fortress. Regular hours are Monday to Thursday 10:00 to 20:30, Friday 10:00 to 21:00, Saturday 9:00 to 21:00, and Sunday and public holidays 9:00 to 20:30, with special hours on Christmas Eve, the Christmas holidays and New Year's Eve.
Christmas Market at Mirabellplatz
Set right in front of the baroque Mirabell Palace, the smaller and especially family friendly Christmas market at Mirabellplatz opens for the 2026 season from November 19 to December 31, with regular hours Sunday to Thursday 10:00 to 20:00 and Friday and Saturday 10:00 to 21:00. Its program traditionally includes the lighting of the Christmas tree and visits from Saint Nicholas and Krampus, making it a favorite with families and children.
Festungsadvent at Hohensalzburg Fortress
Salzburg's highest Christmas market takes place in the courtyard of Hohensalzburg Fortress and is open only on Advent weekends plus December 8, each day from 11:00 to 19:00, running from November 20 to December 20, 2026. Numerous Herrnhut stars light up the fortress lane and courtyard, and combined with the view over the city, create an especially romantic setting.
Visitor Tips: Travel and Accommodation in Salzburg
- Salzburg's Old Town is a pedestrian zone, the Sternarkaden are best reached on foot from the main train station across the Staatsbrücke bridge, or by bus into the Old Town
- Parking directly in the Old Town is limited, the Mönchsberg or Kajetanerplatz garages are recommended, both a short walk from the market
- December in Salzburg typically brings temperatures around freezing and frequent snow, so warm clothing and sturdy footwear are advisable
- Since the Winter Market continues until January 6, it is worth visiting outside the classic advent weeks when the city is generally quieter
- Accommodation in Salzburg's Old Town should be booked well ahead of the advent weekends, when the city fills up quickly
