Welcome to the New Year's Eve Celebrations 2026/2027 in Tartu
Tartu marks New Year's Eve 2026/2027 as a compact university city: Christmas City on Town Hall Square, an ice rink around the Kissing Students fountain, and a public midnight programme on Vabaduse puiestee. Tartu Christmas City runs from 29 November 2026 to 10 January 2027; the night itself is 31 December 2026 into 1 January 2027. In recent years the official city celebration has been free of charge and has not included a municipal fireworks display.

Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026/2027
The exact artist line-up for New Year's Eve 2026/2027 had not been published as of early September 2026. In recent years the city concert on Vabaduse puiestee started around 23:30, followed by video greetings, a midnight production and live music until about 01:00. During the day, Christmas City on Town Hall Square remains the main gathering place for mulled wine, workshops, a carousel and skating; on 31 December and 1 January the site has recently stayed open until 22:00.
Expect a walkable, relatively calm city-centre celebration rather than a fireworks mega-show. Private club nights and restaurant galas usually appear in late autumn. Check tartu.ee, visittartu.com and tartukorraldab.ee close to the date for the confirmed timetable and any traffic closures.
Tickets & Admission for New Year's Eve Tartu
The official city celebration in Tartu has been free: no ticket is required for the public concert or Christmas City, and skating on Town Hall Square is free, while skate rental may cost extra. Separate club parties and hotel or restaurant New Year packages are paid events; prices for 2026/2027 were not yet announced in September 2026. Look for tickets closer to the date on piletilevi.ee, kultuuriaken.tartu.ee and venue websites.
Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Tartu
- Arrive by train or coach from Tallinn (about 2 to 2.5 hours). Town Hall Square and Vabaduse puiestee are walkable from the centre. On New Year's Eve a stretch of Vabaduse puiestee is often closed to traffic and city buses are diverted.
- Late December in Tartu is typically freezing, often with snow. Wear layers, a hat, gloves and non-slip shoes for the ice rink and the outdoor midnight programme.
- Book hotels and apartments near the Old Town and Town Hall Square early, especially for 31 December. Christmas City continues until 10 January 2027, so an extra night is worthwhile.
- Do not plan around a large official fireworks show. Visitors with pets or sensitivity to noise will find Tartu deliberately quieter than many New Year capitals.
- Parking is available at Magistri, the Market Hall and the Kaubamaja, Kvartal and Tasku garages. Bus, train and walking through the lit centre are easier on a crowded night.
