Welcome to Taste Svalbard 2026 in Longyearbyen
Each autumn, Longyearbyen on Spitsbergen turns into the culinary heart of the High Arctic for several days. At Taste Svalbard, known in Norwegian as Smak Svalbard, the restaurants and bars of the world's northernmost town open their doors for a varied program built around regional cuisine and drinking culture.

Program and Schedule: What to Expect in 2026
The festival traditionally spans a long weekend in late summer or early autumn, usually lasting around four to five days. Individual restaurants and bars across town put together their own events, ranging from breakfast gatherings to barbecue evenings and festive tasting dinners at night. The exact 2026 dates and full program had not yet been officially published at the time of research; last year's edition ran in early October.
Tickets and Admission for Taste Svalbard
There is no single festival wide ticket. Each participating restaurant sets its own offer and pricing in Norwegian kroner, ranging from free or low cost street food stalls to higher priced multi course tasting dinners. Bookings for the popular dinner events are made directly with each restaurant and should be arranged early given the limited seating in Longyearbyen.
Visitor Tips: Travel and Accommodation in Longyearbyen
- Longyearbyen can only be reached by air, usually via Oslo or Tromsø, so booking flights early is worthwhile
- By early October the dark season has already begun on Svalbard, so warm and windproof clothing is essential
- Accommodation in Longyearbyen is limited and should be booked well ahead of the festival dates
- Caution regarding polar bears applies outside the settlement, while restaurants and bars in town are easily reached on foot
- Checking the current northern lights forecast can add a natural spectacle to the festival visit
