Welcome to Þjóðhátíð 2026 – Iceland's Greatest Outdoor Festival
From 31 July to 3 August 2026, the Westman Islands (Vestmannaeyjar) become the heart of Icelandic national celebration. Around 15,000 visitors descend on an island with a permanent population of just 4,000 for four days of music, tradition and community. The festival takes place in Herjólfsdalur valley, a natural bowl formed by an ancient volcanic crater that serves as a breathtaking open-air amphitheatre. The main stage sits at the valley floor while campers fill the grassy slopes above.
History and Significance
Þjóðhátíð has a history of over 150 years. In 1874, bad weather prevented the islanders from travelling to the mainland to join the celebrations of the 1,000th anniversary of Iceland's settlement. They organised their own festival instead, and the tradition has grown ever since into Iceland's largest multi-day outdoor festival. The festival takes place annually on the weekend before the first Monday of August, the public holiday known as Verslunarmannahelgi (the Commerce Workers' Holiday).
Highlights
- Bonfire (Friday night): The traditional opening of the festival; thousands gather around a massive fire in Herjólfsdalur valley.
- Fireworks (Saturday night): One of Iceland's most spectacular fireworks displays lights up the valley.
- Hillside Sing-Along (Sunday night): The emotional centrepiece of the festival; all attendees sing traditional Icelandic songs together on the valley slope.
- Live concerts: Iceland's leading artists perform on the main stage; 2026 acts include Retro Stefson, Friðrik Dór, Aron Can, Birgitta Haukdal, Birnir and many more.
- White Tents (Hvítutjöld): Local families invite guests into their private festival tents for food, drink and conversation.

Program 2026
The festival officially opens on Friday, 31 July 2026. Wristband collection is available from Thursday, 30 July from 11:30. Main events take place each evening:
- Friday, 31 July: Opening and traditional bonfire
- Saturday, 1 August: Concerts and grand fireworks display
- Sunday, 2 August: Concerts and the legendary communal sing-along
- Monday, 3 August: Departure day (public holiday Verslunarmannahelgi)
Tickets
Tickets are available exclusively through the official website dalurinn.is. Full festival passes (4 days) start from around USD 180; single day passes (e.g. Saturday only) from around USD 110. Children under 14 enter free. Wristbands are collected on arrival at Herjólfsdalur. A Gold Wristband upgrade provides discounts at food and drink stands, free access to swimming pools and free bus rides throughout the festival weekend.
Getting There
- Ferry from Landeyjahöfn (recommended): Shortest crossing, approximately 35 minutes. Sailings fill up weeks in advance; book early via herjolfur.is.
- Ferry from Þorlákshöfn (alternative): Longer crossing of approximately 2.5 to 3 hours; used as an alternative when surf conditions disrupt the shorter route.
- Domestic flight from Reykjavík: Eagle Air operates a 25-minute service; availability is limited during the festival period.
Visitor Tips
- Book ferry and flight tickets several months in advance; the island is completely sold out during the festival.
- Glass containers are strictly prohibited on the festival grounds.
- Bring warm, waterproof clothing and sturdy footwear; August weather on the islands can be cold and unpredictable.
- Camping equipment is essential; sleeping on the valley slopes is part of the authentic festival experience.
- Accommodation on the mainland (Reykjavík or the south coast) is an option for day-ticket visitors.
- Print your tickets; a barcode is required both for the ferry and for festival entry.
