Welcome to Trier Christmas Market 2026 in Trier
The Trierer Weihnachtsmarkt is one of the most celebrated Christmas markets in Germany, and in 2026 it opens for the 46th time. From 20 November to 22 December 2026, the medieval Hauptmarkt and the Domfreihof in front of the UNESCO World Heritage Trier Cathedral are transformed into a glittering festive landscape in the heart of Germany's oldest city. Admission is free at both locations throughout the entire season. Please note that the market is closed on Totensonntag (Sunday of the Dead), 22 November 2026.
Trier Christmas Market at Hauptmarkt 2026: The Heart of the Festivities
The centrepiece of the Trier Christmas Market is the historic Hauptmarkt, one of the finest medieval squares in Germany. Flanked by centuries-old buildings, the Steipe and the Petrusbrunnen fountain, around 95 beautifully decorated wooden stalls offer an impressive range of goods: handcrafted Christmas decorations, carved wooden figures, candles, jewellery, textiles, regional foods and artisan confectionery. The market season is officially launched with the crowning of the Glühweinkönigin, Germany's only mulled wine queen, who serves as the ambassador of the famous Mosel Winzerglühwein throughout the market.

Domfreihof Christmas Market Trier 2026: Advent in front of the UNESCO Cathedral
At the Domfreihof, the square in front of Trier Cathedral and the Liebfrauenkirche, the second and perhaps most dramatic section of the market unfolds. The imposing west facade of the cathedral provides an unrivalled backdrop for a daily changing stage programme featuring live concerts, interactive theatre, puppet shows by the Puppenbühne Rheinland and performances by tenors and regional musicians. New in 2026 is the first Trierer Weihnachtsmärchen, an interactive participatory storytelling theatre production. The Deutsche Weihnachtsakademie also invites visitors of all ages to join in singing traditional Christmas carols with well-known tenors. Guided tours led by professional local guides bring the history of the Hauptmarkt and Germany's oldest bishopric to life.

The Trier Christmas Market 2026 runs from 20 November to 22 December, with the exception of 22 November (Totensonntag), when it remains closed. Opening hours are Monday to Thursday 11:00 to 20:30, Friday and Saturday 11:00 to 22:00, and Sunday 11:00 to 20:00. The stage programme at the Domfreihof changes weekly and offers performances on almost every day of the season. Highlights include the closing concert featuring the children's choir of Stadttheater Trier alongside star tenor Thomas Kiessling, interactive storytelling theatre and guided city tours that combine the market experience with the Roman and medieval history of Trier.

- By train or bus: Trier is well connected by rail from Luxembourg, Koblenz and Saarbrücken. The main railway station is around a 10-minute walk from the Hauptmarkt.
- By car: Trier is accessible via the A64 and A602 motorways. City centre car parks are available, but heavy traffic is expected on weekends; park-and-ride facilities on the city outskirts are a more convenient option.
- What to wear: Trier lies in the Moselle valley and can be cold and damp in November and December. Warm waterproof clothing and sturdy shoes for the cobblestones are strongly recommended.
- Plan around Totensonntag: The market is closed on 22 November 2026. If you are travelling specifically to visit the market, avoid arriving on that day.
