Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026/2027
The municipal party on Piazza Unità d'Italia usually starts at 10:30 p.m. and runs until about 1:30 a.m. DJs and a live act fill the hours before midnight. Shortly before 12:00 the countdown begins, then fireworks fire from Molo Audace. Music on the square continues after the display. Headliners change every year. No official artist list for 31 December 2026 had been published at the time of research. Check the City of Trieste and Discover Trieste websites in December for confirmation.
Other fixtures include the Concerto di Fine Anno at Teatro Lirico Giuseppe Verdi (most recently 6:00 p.m. on 31 December) and a New Year's Day concert by the city's wind orchestra, last held at Teatro Orazio Bobbio. Restaurants sell multi-course New Year's Eve menus (cenone), while clubs run ticketed parties. On the morning of 1 January, swimmers take a traditional plunge at Barcola.
Tickets & Admission for New Year's Eve Trieste
Access to Piazza Unità d'Italia is traditionally free. Capacity has been capped (around 10,000 people in the last edition) and entry is limited to controlled gates on Via dell'Orologio, Passo Fratelli Fonda Savio and the waterfront. Recent ordinances banned glass bottles, cans, umbrellas, folding chairs, selfie sticks and alcoholic drinks above 1.2% ABV inside the concert zone. Teatro Verdi tickets for the end-of-year concert started at about 25 EUR in the previous season, with under-34 discounts. The civic wind-orchestra concert was about 17 EUR (reduced 13.50 EUR). Restaurant dinners and club events are priced separately and sell out early. Confirm 2026/2027 prices only after official release.
Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Trieste
- Arrive via Trieste Airport (TRS), Trieste Centrale station or the motorway; the Rive waterfront is usually closed to cars from about 8:00 p.m. on 31 December and bus routes are diverted.
- Expect the Bora wind in winter: pack layers, a windproof jacket and sturdy shoes. Air temperatures are often just above freezing, but the harbour feels much colder.
- Hotels near Piazza Unità, Viale XX Settembre and the station sold out for New Year's Eve last season. Book well ahead.
- Enter the square only through official gates and allow time for security checks. Private fireworks are banned inside the event perimeter.
- For a less crowded midnight view, watch the display from the Rive, near Molo Audace if access allows, or from higher ground such as San Giusto.
