It spreads across the historic village centre of Appenzell, along the Hauptgasse, through the side lanes and onto Landsgemeindeplatz. The name comes from «Chlaus» (St Nicholas), whose feast day falls around December 6. More than 30 stalls offer regional crafts, nativity scene accessories, hand knitted socks, art cards and other Christmas gifts. The market traces back to the market rights Appenzell has held since 1353 and remains popular with locals and visitors alike.
Christchindlimarkt Appenzell: What Can Visitors Expect on Postplatz?
The 2026 Christchindlimarkt runs on Saturday, December 5, from 1:00 pm to 7:00 pm, and Sunday, December 6, from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm, on Postplatz in Appenzell. A local association has organized this market for years, with stalls selling hand carved angels and stars, delicate tree and door ornaments, pottery, paintings and other handmade pieces, along with liqueurs and Berewegge, a traditional Appenzell Christmas fruit bread. Illuminated stars and the scent of incense give the square a magical Advent atmosphere, and shops in the village are also open on the surrounding Advent Sundays.
