Welcome to the Christmas Markets 2026 in Marburg

Marburg’s Christmas City season opens on Friday, 27 November 2026 and runs daily until Wednesday, 23 December 2026. The launch event is the light festival Marburg by Night, when the Advent market in front of the historic town hall in the Upper Town and the Christmas market around the Gothic Church of St. Elizabeth both open. Extra Advent stops include the mulled-wine terrace at Bückingsgarten below the Landgrave Castle and the estate market at Hofgut Dagobertshausen. The municipal markets are organised by Stadtmarketing Marburg e. V.

The university town on the Lahn is one of Hesse’s most atmospheric Advent destinations: timber-framed streets, St. Elizabeth’s Church and the illuminated castle on the hill. Admission to all markets described here is free; you pay only at the stalls.

Advent Market at the Historic Town Hall 2026

The Advent market occupies the marketplace in front of the Rathaus (Markt 1, 35037 Marburg) in the Upper Town. Timber-framed houses, the market fountain and the town hall form Marburg’s classic Christmas backdrop. Food and drink dominate: mulled wine, bratwurst, roasted almonds, chestnuts and punch, plus crafts and regional specialities. During market hours the square and Barfüßerstraße are generally closed to cars (typically Monday–Saturday 11:00–22:00, Sunday 12:00–22:00). The public Upper Town lift from Am Plan takes the sting out of the climb. The city calendar for 2026 is 27 November to 23 December; established hours are Monday–Saturday 11:00–21:00 and Sunday 12:00–21:00. On opening night the town-hall market has previously run 11:00–24:00 — confirm the 2026 special hours on marburg.de shortly before you travel.

Christmas Market at St. Elizabeth’s Church 2026

The second municipal market surrounds the Gothic Church of St. Elizabeth (Elisabethstraße / Firmaneiplatz area, 35037 Marburg). While the town-hall market is more of a meeting and food square, this site is the shopping market: baskets, jewellery, winter accessories, ceramics, toys and Christmas decoration. The church is one of Germany’s major Gothic buildings and is illuminated for Marburg by Night. Dates: 27 November to 23 December 2026, daily; usual hours Monday–Saturday 11:00–21:00, Sunday 12:00–21:00. Opening Friday has recently been 15:00–24:00. The site is an easy walk from Marburg (Lahn) station and the natural first stop before the steep Upper Town.

Christmas Market at the Castle and Glühweinzauber Bückingsgarten 2026

There is no large stall village inside the castle courtyard. The castle-side Advent event is the Glühweinzauber / Christmas market at Restaurant Bückingsgarten (Landgraf-Philipp-Straße 6, 35037 Marburg), just below Landgrave Castle. Local tourism calls it perhaps the smallest, highest and most charming market in town. The terrace serves mulled wine, punch and game sausage (including from Jäger Deucker) with a view over the lit old town. The established pattern is the last weekend in November plus every Advent weekend, Saturday and Sunday 12:00–18:00. For 2026 that points to 21–22 November (last November weekend) and 28–29 November, 5–6 December, 12–13 December and 19–20 December; VILA VITA had not fully published the 2026 Bückingsgarten list at the time of research. On 27 November 2026 the castle itself is illuminated for Marburg by Night — worth the climb even if the terrace market is not running that evening.

Advent Market and Christmas Market at Hofgut Dagobertshausen 2026

About five kilometres from the centre, in Marburg-Dagobertshausen, VILA VITA turns Hofgut Dagobertshausen (Im Dorfe 14, 35041 Marburg) into an estate Advent ground with crafts, farm-shop goods and food. Hesse Tourism lists it among the more selective Advent markets. Entry is free. Confirmed 2026 dates: Advent market on 7–8 November; Christmas market on the Advent weekends Friday 27–Sunday 29 November, 4–6 December, 11–13 December and 18–20 December. Christmas-market hours: Friday and Saturday 15:00–19:00, Sunday 12:00–19:00. Expect waffles, crêpes, flame-grilled salmon, game dishes, mulled wine and estate delicacies; Christmas trees are sold in season. Program & Schedule: What to Expect in 2026

The city’s published frame is firm: Marburg by Night on Friday, 27 November 2026, then markets every day until 23 December 2026. Marburg by Night traditionally opens around 17:45 at Willy-Sage-Platz; the Landgrave Castle, several churches and the Upper Town are lit, and many shops stay open until midnight. After the opening night the city markets settle into 11:00–21:00 (Sunday 12:00–21:00).

Supporting programme from recent years — the pattern to expect unless 2026 is announced otherwise — includes a nativity exhibition in the historic town-hall hall, a nativity trail through shop windows from Bahnhofstraße through the Upper Town to Weidenhausen, and the Marburg ice rink at Georg-Gaßmann-Stadion. Choirs, brass and church concerts belong to opening night. Food constants are mulled wine (including apple Glühwein), bratwurst, vegetarian and vegan options in this student city, and estate cooking at Dagobertshausen. Tickets & Admission for the Christmas Markets Marburg

Admission is free at the town-hall Advent market, the St. Elizabeth’s Church market, Bückingsgarten and Hofgut Dagobertshausen. There are no tickets and no box office. You pay only for food, drinks, crafts and optional extras such as the ice rink or the castle museum (the museum is usually closed on Mondays). Deposit mugs are standard; return them at the stalls. Visitor Tips: Travel & Accommodation in Marburg

• Travel by train to Marburg (Lahn). St. Elizabeth’s market is about a ten-minute walk; the public Upper Town lift from Am Plan is the easiest way up to the Rathaus market. By car use park-and-ride and multi-storey car parks — the marketplace and Barfüßerstraße are closed during market hours.
• December days in Marburg are often 0–8 °C, damp and dark by late afternoon. Waterproof shoes for cobblestones, layers and gloves beat decorative but slippery footwear.
• Hotels in the Upper Town and by the station (including Welcome Hotel, Hotel Rosenpark and NOXX) fill up on Advent weekends. Book early, especially around 27 November and December Saturdays.
• Hofgut Dagobertshausen is not in the old town: about five kilometres west, best reached by car or, on Sundays, by the Behringwerke shuttle. A practical plan is the city markets by day and the estate in the late afternoon.
• Accessibility: the church market is flatter than the Upper Town. The castle and Bückingsgarten add more climb; the Schlossbahn (group tours on request) or a taxi help if mobility is limited.
